Fair point, hadn't really considered that. Just frustrated at the lack of investment, I suppose.

Greg Taylor isn't worth £3 million in my opinion but we could have bought him for less had we been pro-active and done our business sooner. The board knew Tierney was going. Arsenal were hoping we would blink first in the negotiations and/or that Tierney would cause trouble behind the scenes to force the move.

We're at a point now were clubs know we're cash-rich and also know we're desperate. Whoever we go for we will end up 'overpaying' for and by that I mean paying more than we would have if we bid earlier in the summer.

My preference is for Meling but if it's to be Taylor then so be it. Going into the season without a back-up LB is not acceptable. If we need to pay through-the-nose to make sure we don't go into a huge season under-strength then that's exactly what we need to do, however unpalatable that may be for our bean-counter-in-chief.

The pain of it should cause us to get our act together and do things differently in the future...but it won't.

People are fed up of the transfer sagas, protracted negotiations and excuses for why we can't bring in the players we need. It's at a point now were it shows they are either incapable or unwilling of concluding deals for players that we need; neither are acceptable. Even less so when you factor in that he is being paid well-above the market rate for a club of our size.

We could’ve signed Taylor 6/12 months ago and he would’ve provided good cover for Tierney.

But then, that would require some form of succession planning to be in place....

It was obvious as * that Tierney was off as soon as the Arsenal interest was confirmed, yet here we are with a few days to go until the end of the window still scrambling about for a left back.

Agreed. For a club that is so candid about our transfer policy of buying young promising players, putting them on 4 or 5 year deals and punting them after the 2nd year when we will get maximum value for them, we are absolutely hopeless at sourcing replacements.

Surely if we're reasonably confident of incoming bids, a replacement should be sourced at the 18 month mark with them allowed to bed in to make the transition as seamless as possible?

I was going to say the uncertainty with the rat and Congerton may have meant we didn't want to spend money but we did on Bayo and Shved, so that argument is void. The whole recruitment side of things needs tore up and started from scratch, for a club of our size to operate in the way we do is shambolic.

I've been saying that for ages. We should also be looking at buying promising young players, like Hickey, and loaning them back to the parent club for a season or so. It won't always work out, but it would be cheaper than waiting until they are fully established and the clubs want the full whack for them, and you still run the risk it might not work out.

If we don't think Taylor is worth 3 mil why the * are trying to get him to replace Tierney [25mil] they should be looking for a player with proven quality and you wont get that for less than 3/5 mil .

Celtic are set to hold new talks today as they step up their bid to sign Kilmarnock defender Greg Taylor, Football Insider has learned.

The Hoops are working on a deal to land the left-back but are running out of time to secure deal as the Scottish window cut-off is next Monday night.

A Celtic source has told Football Insider that negotiations are set to continue today as the club look to secure a breakthrough in their pursuit of the Scotland international.

Taylor, 21, is eager to move to the Scottish champions after establishing himself as one of the outstanding full-backs in the Scottish Premiership during his time at Kilmarnock.

He has graduated through the ranks at Rugby Park to accumulate an impressive 131 appearances for the club and break into the senior Scotland time.

Taylor was absent from Kilmarnock’s SPL match last weekend with what was claimed to be a hamstring injury.

The timing of his absence led to widespread suggestions that a move to Celtic was in the offing and, although an agreement is not yet in place, discussions are ongoing.

Taylor has two years remaining on his contract at Kilmarnock, but the club recently signed full-back Niko Hamalainen on loan from QPR.

There has been talk of the Ayrshire club holding out for £3million for Taylor, but Football Insider has been told that is not the case and an offer of £1million or just over may seal the deal.

Waiting until early September to sign a Kilmarnock guy who'd have jumped at the chance to join from June 8th, when the window opened :56: What a colossal waste of time.

For 3m they can throw Stephen O'Donnell and a life time supply of pies in aswell. Is this the 'quality' and 'help' that Lennon has been alluding to?

Do you mean he has agreed to sign if a fee can be met?

you can’t sign for someone and not announce it as it invalidates the insurance of the player and also announcement to the stock exchange.

Also it must be uploaded to the fifa TMS immediately.

    So he definitely hasn’t signed.

One positive spin is maybe we had a breakthrough with Meling/someone else and decided against this? Optimistic i know :(
