Hearts had an extra man in midfield ,because Rogic was well off the pace and they only played 1 upfront, we could easily have played Ntcham and dropped Hayes and just went with the 3 at the back , big difference when Ntcham came on.

I dont know how accurate these stats are, but they certainly support the notion that we need a defensive midfielder to play next to Mcgregor.
We might be able to dominate most domestic teams playing mcgregor in the deep lying playmake role, but we will be exposed when playing better, more powerful teams.

We still lack a proper DM.

It's probably something Lennon will look to sort. I don't think Brown comes under that bracket personally and isn't getting any younger.

Need another big monster like Wanyama, some of the players brought in under Lennon’s last spell is overlooked imo.

Fitbaw players aren’t there to tackle although I’d suggest it isn’t his worst attribute.

He’ll be just fine against European opposition, one of the last guys to worry about actually. He’s as technically as good as anything we come up against.

I don't think anyone is worried about him in that respect. I think the point is more about who is next to him.

There's no denying if we could find another Wanyama type from somewhere it would benefit us against tougher opposition.

Lack of a good defensive mid is one of the reasons we have struggled in Europe since he left for me.

Obviously players like that aren't just kicking about but it's an area we should look at.

A Wanyama type would be incredible, undoubtedly. Don’t think a single Celtic fan would argue against that.

Defenders kind of are? Are you suggesting you are happy to play him in a defensive midfield/anchor role in the champions league? Nobody is doubting his ability, but clearly his best attributes are in attack.

All the top teams have defensive midfielders who can get about the pitch, tackle, win headers and intercept. Fabinho, fernandinho, busquets, kante. We need that too.

Hes technically good, but he will be nowhere near the very best the CL has to offer if we make it.

Spot on. Big vics dominance was unmatched.

Id even argue we have looked lightweight in recent games against Rangers. Which is what I have always thought about them until this season.

The big unit doesn't have to be a sitting midfielder either by the way..

If McGregor was still deep lying, we could have a box to box type big physical player that could be just as effective..

Think most people wouldn’t buy somebody who’s out for 8 months with a ligament injury at that point tbf

Don't think he has the discipline to just be the sitter..

Didn't see this post before mine a second ago but he could be more similar ilk of the box to box player as he has the pace and can press from the front very effectively..

Whether he has the quality to be a first teamer doing that, remains to be seen...but we could do with a player like that..

As gash as he is, Moussa Sissoko shows how useful that can be in Europe this season with Spurs...

I’d play him where he’s best which is the guy that drops deep and links defence to attack. But ultimately he can play anywhere and be class, as he’s shown even in the Champions League.

Don’t doubt he’d be better in Europe beside a Wanyama/Kante/Makelele type whatever you want to call it either.

I have zero qualms about McGregor in the Champions League, arguably the last guy I’m concerned about like I say.

Good shout mate. He's pish on the ball but been a key player in them getting to a champion's league final and winning a world cup..

McGregor has to be the sitter for me next season. He's key there in how we'll play next year creatively starting attacks and is quick enough about the ground to cover. I thought he was excellent there for a new role..

Then it allows us to have a quick box to box player in next to Christie and back to bossing midfields..
