I'd like to know what is actually happening with refuse collections in the aforementioned council areas . Angus Council are currently trying to force bin collection workers to work on a split shift rota ; 6 a.m. until 2 p.m./ 2 p.m. until 10 p.m. This has been so unpopular with the workers , that Unite union members are on strike . The Angus Council reasoning behind this move is to save money by cutting the fleet of bin lorries over time . But not cutting jobs . I have heard that this policy has been introduced in these two other council areas , so it would be great to hear from folk that have already experienced this policy . Better still , the experiences of council bin workers . I know local government funding is under severe stress , but the annual saving of £160,000 in Angus , is a drop in the ocean . But it's causing a tidal wave of hassle for the bin workers . And the public too .

I’m Angus Council, and my garden waste didn’t get emptied this week, nor did my purple bin general waste. Strikes are Monday’s and Tuesday’s. But my Thursday and Friday collections didn’t go ahead either.

I’d also like to hear how things went at these other Local Authorities, didn’t realise it happens like this elsewhere.

literally just back from the council re-cycling centre in South Ayrshire , the queues to get into it are fekkin huge . bins emptied once a month is a fekkin joke as is 5 different bins to separate the waste for them , no rebate on the council tax either . I know a couple of lads on the lorries and they are depressed as * ! shifts starting at half four in the morning and other shifts theyre emptying bins at ten oclock at night Saturdays and Sundays as well .

That's straight eight hour shifts not split shifts.

Chefs would commonly work split shifts, in at 10am til 2pm back in that evening at 6 till ten, working weekends, bank hols the lot.

A shift allowance would soften the blow would it not? The council could maybe lower their target saving to 130k and pay 30 bin lorry workers an extra grand a year to work unsociable shifts.

Hi Angusceltic67 , I see what your saying about straight shifts or split shifts . The bin workers in Angus are being forced to do one week early shift , and the following week back shift . Friday has different hours ; early shift 6.00 a.m. until 1.30 p.m. , back shift 1.30 p.m. until 9.00 p.m.

If bins in South Ayrshire and Fife get emptied at weekends , does that mean the bin workers are getting paid overtime ? If that's the case , it defeats the purpose of adopting shifts . Paying out overtime to complete the round . It saddens me to think that these schemes are drawn up by accountants , with zero practical knowledge of the actual job .
