Is this worse than living in a time when pretty much nobody had a voice ?

Not in the slightest but I think their can be a happy medium.

People seem to ignore context these days.

Barnes is a * analyst. He is right in his point but he doesn’t get across too well. * needs to learn about labelling racial prejudice on our club and fans to be a spokesperson for anything inflammatory on unacceptable speech. John Barnes was the man who said he didn’t get a fair chance at Celtic and was sacked because he was black.

Hey guys if we were in his position we would have thought the same but probably not said it .
I am sure we have all had bad thoughts about somebody due to their race , gender or politics.

Any * ( not having a go at Nasser in particular just happens to be the post here ) but generally that starts a post with "we live in these times" or "snowflake this snowflake that" pretty much exposes themselves as having no idea of life before the internet.

Of course you are right though there is a medium.

I think it’s been overblown. I’m not sure if people have seen the interview itself or just read the script, but to me it comes across almost as a confession. He’s saying ‘this was my thought process at the time - it was horrendous. I regret ever having those thoughts and I’m just thankful nobody got hurt’.

I don’t think somebody should be condemned for admitting their flaws, particularly when they were so long ago, when they’ve come forward with them under no obligation, and talked about them in a manner that makes it clear they were appalled by them when looking back.

You need context in any situation. This wasn’t Liam Neeson, millionaire Hollywood celebrity, this was Liam Neeson, young man in Belfast in the 1970’s whose friend/family had just been raped. Was his reaction wrong? Absolutely - that’s what he himself is saying. But extreme anger is understandable given the environment and circumstances.

I thought Barnes came across fine there Packy. I also thought he did a few months ago (maybe longer) when discussing Raheem Sterling. In terms of his sacking from Celtic is there a full transcript or clip of what he said ? If he labelled Celtic and our fans racist he was obviously wrong. If he did I would love to hear him be given a proper interview to explain if he stands by that and why.

I admit to being harsh as i will take insult of our club as insult on family. I have went back on several articles and it’s clear headlines but I couldn’t see actual dialogue or direct quotes. So that says more about the media at play. As for this interview I do agree with his points but he appeared over excited and agitated. He has done the media interviews for years and should know his points would have been more resounding with a cool head.
I actually love Barnes the player and loved watching him in that mid eighties Liverpool team. Such a fluent attacking side and him and wee Beardsley made them tick.

In terms of the Celtic stuff Packy like I say I would love to hear the whole thing. Maybe he did say it exactly as it is portrayed and if so I would love to hear him try to explain it. Or maybe he gave a full and frank interview and a sentence was taken out of it but had no-one else willing to put it in context as he has done for Neeson. I honestly don't know.

I think he speaks well. In terms of the way he came across there on the TV. I will give him a pass as I can remember all those interviews in the 90's with the interviewers sneering at Martin McGuinness, or Gerry Adams, or even at times the likes of Brid Rodgers. For me the smarmy * getting told things in his ears by his team was still getting shown up by the guy who was been genuine.

    It’s unbelievable.

Infact, I’m sure I read something online (or here) about some fucknugget claiming non-whites can’t be racist. Heard it all now!

You see this is the sort of dangerous bollocksology that has led to so much * and racism on social media. A vague, throwaway comment based on a possible vague, throwaway comment that may or may not have been made.

What I will say is this; it is much harder for a white man to be offended by a racist remark from a black man than the other way around. One will come with a weight of history that the other hasn't got. There is no comparison at all. Of course black people can be racist, there is a history of racism, based on skin colour, in sub-Saharan Africa, but if they are racist towards white people it comes as a result of anger, an anger that comes from centuries of mistreatment by whites.
It is vital that we understand that as a species or we will never move forward.
