Getting at least Roberts back this weekend would be a real boost we need some of his creativity in attack.

STUART ARMSTRONG is set to hand Celtic a Euro boost by returning for next week’s showdown with Zenit St Petersburg.

The Scotland midfielder’s rehab from a hernia op is on schedule and he hopes to be fit for Thursday’s Europa League first leg.

Armstrong has missed Celtic’s last four games and his return will be welcomed by Brendan Rodgers.

The Hoops gaffer is currently trying to cope with a huge injury list at a crucial stage of the season. Defender Dedryck Boyata suffered a groin injury against Killie on Saturday and is a doubt for the Zenit game.

But fellow stopper Kris Ajer hopes to be fit, with the young Norwegian confident the ankle injury he suffered at Rugby Park isn’t too serious.

January signing Marvin Compper is working his way back to fitness, while Mikael Lustig could be fit to face the Russians.

And Celtic’s defensive options were boosted yesterday when Tony Ralston played 90 minutes of a 3-0 Scottish Youth Cup win over St Johnstone.

The right-back hasn’t featured for the first team since September after picking up a knee injury.

No question about it and I would add that now that we know that Lustig and Armstrong were carrying injuries for a while before missing out fully lets hope we don't just have those 2 back but we get them back truly fully fit and able to get back to their best as we have really missed Armstrong's dynamic play and goals from midfield and Lustig's consistency at right back.

Celtic's injury problems look to be easing after coach John Kennedy revealed that two central defenders are close to playing for the first team.

Brendan Rodgers' squad has been hit with numerous injuries in recent weeks and Dedryck Boyata and Kristoffer Ajer were added to the list of casualties when they were both forced to leave the field during Celtic's defeat to Kilmarnock on Saturday.

The loss of two centre-backs was of real concern ahead of the Europa League tie against Zenit St Petersburg next week but Kennedy has said that at least one stopper will be fit to face the Russian side.

Celtic fans haven't yet had a chance to see January signing Marvin Compper in action and he is nearing his debut, though Kennedy warned he won't be rushed into action.

"We have one or two others, including Compper, who is back in training and we hope to see one or two other faces coming back in," he said.

"But these are guys who haven't had a lot of minutes on the training pitch, so we have to make sure they get their fitness up in terms of training before we look at the games."

The coach also said that there was no news on how long Boyata and Ajer would be absent for, with both getting scans to assess the extent of their injuries.

Ajer himself seemed to think he might be fit enough to play this weekend against Partick Thistle which would be a big boost if he is given of course Hendry will be cup tied so he is out for Saturday.

BRENDAN RODGERS is set to be handed a triple injury boost for Celtic’s Europa League crunch.

Tom Rogic, Patrick Roberts and Stuart Armstrong are all pushing to be fit to face Zenit St Petersburg.

Rodgers has been without midfielder Rogic and wide man Roberts due to knee and hamstring injuries respectively, while Armstrong had surgery last month to sort a hernia problem.

Aussie star Rogic, out since December 5, is back in training ahead of schedule and desperate to make the last-32 showdown against the Russians.

Loan idol Roberts has been out since November 29 after suffering a fresh hamstring strain.

Next Thursday’s first leg against Zenit could come too soon for the fleet-footed frontman, who has been badly missed.

But Rodgers is believed to be looking at having Roberts available for the second leg in St Petersburg on February 22.

SunSport revealed on Tuesday that midfielder Armstrong, whose last game was against Rangers on December 30, is on course with his recovery to make the home tie against Zenit.

Dedryck Boyata and Kris Ajer were both injured in the defeat at Kilmarnock and have joined Mikael Lustig in the treatment room after the Swede also sat out the wins against Hearts and Hibs.

Big opportunity for Ajer and possibly Hendry next Thursday. The young Scottish lads seem to rise to the occasion more often than not so here’s hoping.

BR on injuries: "Ajer had a nasty knock to his achilles but should be ok for the weekend. Boyata will struggle. Simunovic will be in because we’re playing on grass. Rogic and Roberts have re-joined training but they’re still a bit away."

BR: "I don’t think Boyata will be ready for Thursday. The medical team said it would be around a couple of weeks. We’re assessing the rest of the players day by day. It’s an unfortunate situation that we’re in but we get on with it."
