Read his post again, it was patronising.

Most people that have actually watched him play would take him for footballing reasons. People aren’t just calling for some random dud to play for Celtic because he refuses to wear a poppy, he has over 50 caps for Ireland and well over 100 appearances in the English Premier League.. he’s a good footballer.

Aye fair enough, I can see how that comes across..

He could have worded it better, the sentiment rings true for me though. He's probably not good enough but some will want him regardless, mainly for his morally correct stance on the Poppy and his obvious love for the club.

People like Stephen Ward and Glen Whelan probably have over 50 caps and 100 PL appearances as well but that doesn't mean they're good enough either.

If Ireland were a top class international side and he played for any decent English teams it'd be a better arguement.

I think he’s a good enough player regardless but I don’t see anything wrong with people using his political leanings and love of the club as reasons for signing him either, if they were to give him an extra edge, similar to when playing for Ireland then I can only see that as a positive.

I do think it would need to be at the right price considering we already have good wingers, but I’d be fairly confident if he was to sign that he would end up a big success here and something of a cult hero, for football reasons as well as his personality.

That’s fine but I didn’t actually argue that McClean is good enough for Celtic purely on having so many caps for Ireland, my argument was that it’s not some random dud we’re talking about.

I think he’s good enough for Celtic because I have watched him play numerous times and it is obvious to me that he is a good footballer.

If not in actual competitive matches, he'll definitely line out at some stage even if its a charity match.

I would honestly fear for his safety, it would be much worse than what Lenny got.

Fair enough, your entitled to your opinion mate and you and the Irish lads on here are probably better placed to judge having seen more of him..

I just don't think it's what we need at the moment, he's better than Hayes but not as good as Sinclair, Forrest, Roberts and Johnston is a big prospect too. Would like us to add to this area LW/RW but I want us to add a player to make a difference in the CL.. and he's not it, I don't think..

There both Irish so hence the comparisons with Stokes and Hayes neither can get a regular game for Ireland

If it wasn't for the poppy stuff there would be a lot more in favour of him

Are you implying that Celtic supporters don't want him because of his Poppy stance? :56:

I actually think you’re right... if anything it seems to be deflecting from the fact he’s a very decent player.

Find it mind boggling that people will completely dismiss a player who was absolutely pivotal in getting a relatively weak Irish side into a World Cup play off with crucial goals against sides like Wales and Austria, as well as great performances throughout.
