I know it's probably the unpopular opinion but I do think Ronaldo is the better player. If I was to pick a player who could player for any team in any league with any level of player, I think Ronaldo could do it anywhere. I don't know if Messi could (there's no denying he is world class though). That's the main reason I'd rather Ronaldo and think he's number one.

Also, I can see them both overtaking number 1 in the list, it will probably come down to who plays longer to be number 1 all time scorer.

Ronaldo would have to keep up his scoring rate for another 6 seasons to become top goal scorer ever and Messi for 8 years more.

What makes you think Messi couldn't?

    Out of interest.

Ronaldo is a fantastic player and has transformed himself into a remarkable goalscorer, but Messi can score just like him, while also having the better footballing ability IMO. He is far more flexible as a player and it will help him to sustain his career at the top level for a lot longer than CR, I feel, who we are already seeing signs of aging in.

Messi would walk in to any team in the world and instantly be the best player at the club.

There's no doubt of Messi's ability he is incredible but I think Ronaldo's attributes are more suited any style of football. He's fast strong physical technical and 6ft something.

I couldn't imagine Messi playing for a Sam allardyce team for example but Ronaldo would be a star. I also think he could play tiki taka style as Well, Messi would be better in that style of course but I think Ronaldo could do it.

The main reason is I think Ronaldo could play for any team and adapt to any system with barely any issue, I don't think Messi could and if I were to choose one of have Ronaldo in my team over Messi which is why I think he's better. No doubt though the 2 best players of this era of football.

He'd be the best player (apart from Ronaldo for me) but doesn't mean he'd fit into the teams style.

I’ve always thought when you take goals out of the equation that Messi is basically an Iniesta - still one of the greatest ever produced. Ronaldo though? More like a Nani or Quaresma.

Messi is just the all round better and more intelligent footballer. Taking nothing away from Ronaldo he’s easily the second best player I’ve ever seen but Messi is on another level.

Without the cosmic goals ratio Messi is Maradona. Which is why I always find it bizarre when folk argue Messi couldn't lace his boots. He has and more.

Ronaldo without the goals, post United, wouldn't get a game for Madrid. At United he was a Nani sand dancer type.

I don't think he could play for a tony pulis or a Sam allardyce type of style. Or he could do it but he wouldn't stand out anywhere near as much, where as Ronaldo would. It's really difficult to pick between them I think they are extremely close and can both do incredible things but Ronaldo edges it for me because I genuinely think he could play for any team any style and stand out.

Really? I think he needed to completely re-invent his game to do so and in that time, cut out a lot from his game so now he’s purely mostly a goalscorer.

Put Ronaldo in Barca and there’s no way he stands out as much as Messi does, because he is incapable of the same things as Messi.

I'd agree in Barca he wouldn't stand out as much as Messi he'd be like a better Suarez but in the majority of other systems Messi wouldn't stand out as much as Ronaldo imo

All about opinions mate but thinking of any styles, Messi slots into them effortlessly, Ronaldo needs to be the one the styles are shaped round.

PSG, Barca, Bayern, City.... Most teams for me would need to adapt to Ronaldo and make sure he’s the focal point, the man who’s getting on the end of the chances. Messi they don’t need to, as he’s similultaneously the best playmaker in the world, the best player on the ball in the world and the best finisher. Don’t think the same could be said for Ronaldo at all.

    Wit? :56::56::56::56:

Messi and/or Ronaldo could walk into ANY team on the planet......no, any team in HISTORY and subsequently either be or become the best player in the team, without question.

Messi AND Ronaldo are far superior players to any player in history, because of many variables.

Is Messi better than Pele? Absolutely.

Is Ronaldo better than Pele? I believe so.

Is Messi better than Maradonna? Aye

Is Ronaldo better than Maradonna? Of course he is.

The only question out there worth even debating is Messi better than Ronaldo, or is Ronaldo better than Messi.

Given that Ronaldo is what, 2 years older than Messi? I think at this moment in time Ronaldo just edges it as the better player. But will Messi be better at 31/32 than what Ronaldo is at 31/32? * right.

The only thing that leaves it a fair old guess is how much further both can carry on with their careers. i think Messi will be one of them who could probably last to about 35/36, whereas Ronaldo probably could carry on to closer 40.

Either way, I still believe that when both men have hung up their boots, Messi will be the ultimate winner between the two.
