Watched parts of the debate last night, was much better than the BBC one, I think that had a lot to do with how Ponsonby moderated it.

Interesting what Davidson had to say and if I'm honest... I do kinda agree with her. There are some non-essential degrees/courses that should require self-funding.

If Crawford wants to spend 3 years getting * and studying for his fine arts degree that's great but the taxpayer shouldn't have to pay for it...

What Davidson has to say regarding prescription's and education is common sense. Lets be honest its only because she is a tory and that therefore means its wrong ... or it does in the heads of those who need to keep wandering around with the chip on their shoulder anyway :smiley-laughing002:

How much does the free prescriptions for all policy cost the government? It's a nice idea but I can't help but thinking the money could be better spent elsewhere.

No wonder Davidson has went on about this.
    This is from 2015.

NHS wasting £31million a year on ‘free’ drugs

SCOTLAND’S NHS is paying a record £31million each year on free prescriptions for supermarket painkillers.

The statistics published yesterday showed the NHS spent £1.19billion on prescription drugs in 2014/15, up by 27.1 per cent over the past 10 years.

That's ridiculous. I wonder if more people knew about stuff like that would they still support the policy.

From the debates I've watched Patrick Harvie has probably been the best.

Speaks well and doesn't shout and biker constantly like the rest.

Do you think it's right to spend £30m of the health budget on paracetamol when the health service is under as much strain as it is at the moment?

    Both votes SNP.

I'll possibly vote for Harvie and the Greens when my vote and the votes of every other Scot matters. When we have self determination.

As its the tories who have talked about it, people will just assume its them being * and * all will happen/change peoples minds. As its something the SNP benefit from I shouldn't moan about it :smiley-laughing002:

Mate I'm sorry if I have disappointed you :86: however this shouldn't be about tory or labour etc its common sense they (the NHS/docs) are * away 10's of millions in a certain area when that money could be better spent in other areas, be that more doctors/nurses/research whatever.

The other point in having free subscriptions, without going into detail, why in the name of * should I qualify for free prescriptions given my earnings its utter madness. Yet anyone who dares to say 'lets look at this' is immediately tarred as a tory its embarrassing. Seriously mate this way of thinking is going to hamper Scotland when we do gain Independence. I would go as far as say if it is not addressed the long term effect will see us Independent then bankrupt as a country.

Well its not me as I haven't even voted :smiley-laughing002:

There speaks a man who's been around long enough to know that you NEVER trust a Tory * when it comes to anything to do with the NHS.

What Davidson is saying at the moment re prescription charges isn't entirely unreasonable but there's not a * chance the Tories would let it rest there if they ever got their hands on Scotland's NHS. Sooner or later we'd all be paying the £8 for our prescriptions, irrespective of whether we could afford it or not.

    Reptile * *.

I thought last night's debate was a bit better than the first one. Allowing the five leaders to cross examine each other was a good twist. Once again, Nicola Sturgeon was the clear winner for me. She is by far the most polished leader of the five.

I also found it interesting that the two biggest rounds of applause all night from the audience were when the question of a second Independence referendum was being discussed. One for Nicola Sturgeon and one for Ruth Davidson. This says to me that the constitutional question is far from dead and that feelings are still strong on each side. The Tory and Kezia Dugdale tried to box Sturgeon into a corner by saying she should respect the referendum result "for a generation" but I thought Sturgeon did a really good job of getting around that argument and keeping her options open.

As for the two guys............Patrick Harvie's awright but he doesn't sound convincing half the time and when people pick holes in his policies he looks like he's toiling to come up with rebuttals. Willie Rennie's * hopeless.

The tuition fee argument is irritating me all round, from politicians to the general public.

Many states have free tuition for their citizenship, including Norway, Sweden, Germany, Austria and France. It is statistically proven that a well educated society improves economic performance.

Up until the late 90's university education was pretty much free, yet the adults of today want to pull up the draw bridge - 'nope, can't afford it - doesn't matter what we got, la la la, not listening.'

Also, this notion that it benefits wealthier kids, therefore it should be charged - what? These wealthier kids' parents pay plenty of tax, should they not be afforded anything by the state, no? Irregardless of whether it primarily benefits wealthy kids, it still benefits students from deprived backgrounds - no matter the number.

And what really perplexes me is this notion that less students from poorer backgrounds are attending university, therefore we must charge? How does charging students increase attainment from those in the poorest families?

What actually needs to be evaluated is primary education and thereafter secondary education - this is where it all goes wrong. It's also quite clear there is a socio-economic and socio-cultural problem within Scotland. This is the area that needs examined, re-thought and overhauled.

On your point Daibh. It's quite common to say a degree is worthless but it quite patently isn't. More people are going, yes - however it's still a minority. The numbers at the lowest estimate are 17% or as high as 37% but nowhere near Blair's 'dream' of 50%. And you'll find that most jobs which are not specialised (doctors, nurses, engineers, dentists, accountant and solicitors etc etc) that have salaries over £20k, require a degree. I'm sure we all know someone - maybe a few - who never went to uni, went straight to work or on an apprenticeship and earn a right good living but that is not the norm, it's very much the exception. Seriously, you should see the hundreds and thousands of jobs advertised on the University career websites. Corporations are increasingly demanding university educated workers. It's just the way the market is heading.

So, corporate Britain either reforms and places less emphasis on having a degree educated workforce; or Britain does what other nations do and meet the demands of the capitalist market, helping by educating their citizens at degree level.

Where is it you're getting your statistics. I don't doubt them but it'd be interesting to see. I read a Guardian article not long ago (slamming the free tuition right enough) and it states this:

    http://www.theguardian.com/higher-e...and-higher-education-participation-inequality

Some of the statistics are skewed though - you don't need three A's to get into the best universities it can be two for many universities - including Edinburgh. It's different for Glasgow/Strathclyde because they are situated in a densely populated region and so demand outstrips supply and they can ask for whatever they want.

What it shows is that at the top end, we do rank really high; however at the bottom end we are pretty low, which is concerning. As I said though - that is a socio-economic problem.

I never really agreed with Tony Blair's aspiration to have 50% of young people going to university. I would rather see more of our young people doing something vocational like learning a trade than going to university to do surf studies or David Beckham studies.
