The thing that hasn't been mentioned in this thread is that TV revenue has allowed the teams in the EPL compete for the top players in the world. Football transfer fees and wages are high all over Europe not just in England.

It could be said though that the teams elsewhere in Europe who are paying these top fees are the really big clubs, such as Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich & so on.

Back in the day the likes of Liverpool & Manchester United were always able to compete for the top players, the difference now is that we see the likes of Southampton spending over £60 million and even Hull City spending £40 million.

Means the same old teams can't hoard all the good players like they used to.

Yeah, they've been replaced and joined by a few new teams, but the issue remains the same, doesn't it?

Aye, if football remains the same as it is now. Clubs like Celtic, Ajax, PSV, Feyenoord, Benfica, Porto, Sporting, Olympiacos, Panathinaikos, Steaua Bucharest, Anderlecht, Club Brugge, Dynamo Kiev - who've probably made 15 or so European Cup finals between us, will never get to one again, theres absolutley no chance of it.

Even french teams like Marseille, St Etienne and Bordeaux or any others before PSG and Monaco got rich had no hope and other small European teams who were once good and could compete like Partizan, Red Star, Dinamo Zagreb, Malmo, Gothenburg and that are even worse off.

In the last 18 European Cup finals, only 2 teams outside Spain, England, Italy and Germany have made it - Monaco and Porto who weirdly played against each other. And it's harder now than it was then for these kind of teams as the others have got even richer again.

Brian Clough, circa 1973, is asked why crowds are down. Goes on an anti-tv rant.

    Seems familiar.

UEFA could make a start in making things more fair. By making it only 4 teams from each country can actually play in Europe. That means no teams from Spain, England, and Germany would be in the Europa League and only 1 Italian team, 1 French team etc. Then more teams from wee League would get into it and have a chance of getting far which would over time boost these wee teams.

Also make it no teams from the CL drop into the Europa, it should be a different competition from the start.

The Europa League should be like a Champions League for small teams, not littered with the B teams of teams from Italy, England and Spain.

I wonder if a breakaway association could re-create a Champions League.

Imagine all the countries except England, Italy, Spain and Germany refused to take part in the Champions League and United to create a competition called The Real Champions Cup where only the Champions of all the other countries competed.

When you think of it, it was actually UEFA who created the massive gap we see today by making the Champions League available to 2/3/4 teams from the same country. If that never happened things probably wouldnt have took off money wise like they did.

    I'm sure it's a little more than £8 million?
