I have seen a heron standing in the water 10 yards from me at night on the beach at Portobello as the waves come in.

15 years ago i could count on one hand the amount of herons id seen in my life.
Where specifically are you mate. Never seen a Bald eagle, but love seeing Pelicans.

My son hasn't been in his own house for too long and this morning I was up at his flat. He told me at 2 in the morning, he heard a loud bang. He got up, searched his home, didn't see anything out of the ordinary, and went back to bed. When he got up this morning, he went into his kitchen ,opened the blinds and saw a big outline of a Pigeon ,where it had flew into his window. He showed me it. You could still see the outline of the bird by that chalky, dust thing they've got in their feathers. I've heard about it many times, but it's the first time I've ever seen it in real life.

Bower birds are building a nest in my next door neighbour's back yard. They nest on the ground, and the nest is like an intricately woven basket. Male bower birds love the colour blue. We've been putting blue pegs in the middle of the garden, and the bower bird takes the pegs and decorates the nest with it.

We've also had black cockatoos in the trees in the back yard. I've never seen them where I live before. They have a call that sounds like what I'd imagine a pterodactyl would have sounded like.

The sights, and particularly the sounds of Australian wildlife are incredible....and ive only been in the cities. Couldnt believe how many different parrots and cockatiels there were in the wild there.

Professor Yaffle was the name of the Woodpecker in telly show Bagpuss . He was a wee bit patronising , up himself and wore specs . When Pat Nevin first appeared on telly wearing specs ( probably Sportscene ) , I shouted out "look it's Professor Waffle" to my late mother's amusement .

Off my local beach as High Tide was being hit an amazing sight of Hundreds of Gulls and Terns feeding very close as tens of Thousands of Small Whiting fish came so close in to avoid the chasing thousands of Mackerel, hundreds and Hundreds of the Small Whiting were being trapped on the beach.
I could actually see very clearly the larger Mackerel attacking the vast shoals of Small Whiting, fantastic. The Gulls of course eating both species,a small number of Gannet came in close,as did a couple of Grey Seal.

I seen that happen once up near Oban. Not the seabirds, but the small fish beaching themselves at being chased by larger fish.

Cool stuff mygirlmaria, yes it is amazing how the Food chain works,Mackerel chase the smaller fish torwards the Shore, bigger fish such as cod then are attracted by the Mackerel and Seabirds join the frenzy!
I would love to get a clear view of further out, imagine how many Fish and other creatures you could see?

Mackerel are coming very close to the shore these days. One even ended up on my dinner plate last night. Can't get much closer than that.
