They're obviously a couple of pawns in a much larger game; A perfect distraction.

Their nationality and gender shouldn't really be a factor. Everybody would reap in the financial benefits of smuggling large amounts of class A drugs if there was no risk of punishment or chance of being caught. It was a poor choice, poor decision, bad move and the consequences were not unknown.

My point was you were making a comparison that was not like with like.

Well from the defence point of view they will hope for a judge who looks on it as simply then.
Not really "some drugs" thou is it ? That amount would no doubt have caused plenty of misery , Something these 2 are likely to find out about.

    Yea, that happens a lot.
Key word "Juvenile" they are not, they are adults. Hopefully (if they are guilty) no leniency will be shown. So, assuming they are guilty, why have any sympathy for them ?

You seem to have missed point (iii)... the one about deterring others from doing likewise.

That'll be the point where the jail term makes some level of sense! :86:

See when the Scottish girl is saying who she is watch the Irish girl. As she says ''Melissa Reid'' the Irish girl has this wee smirk on her face. Take from that what you will.

Why do you have sympathy for them then?

They are practically kids. They have made one big mistake and it might ruin their lives. It is quite a hard way to learn your lesson. They could be in jail for the best days of their lives.

Practically kids or not....they are old enough to know the risks they are taking and the consequences of being caught.

Not like with like as sentence would be lighter and conditions would be better.

Fair enough, but * me its hardly like they are 10 year olds that dont know any better.
Anyone who pays any attention to the news will know their is severe penatlys for smuggling drugs.
How come their not a uprising of sympanty on this forum when drug-dealers are caught local then?

One of the lassies favourite films is listed as Blow. Never seen it but read a wee bit there.. obviously knew a bit about what she was getting into. Probably seen an easy way to make a decent bit of money and live the high life for a while.

Just saw that they're claiming that they were forced at gunpoint. Don't believe that for a second.

    Good luck to them.

War on drugs has been done in the same way for years now and it is clearly not working. It has been decades now that young people from western Europe get thrown in jail in exotic countries for exremely long times. These sentences are obviously not deterring other people from doing it. There are other factors at work as well (such as the chances of getting caught).

I think people should put this crime into perspective. Yes, drugs kill people. But so does drunk driving. Consequently, people who drive drunk (even without harming anyone) should be thrown in jail for at least (because I think drunk driving is actually worse than drug smuggling) 25 years. That will deter others from drunk driving.

They are legally adults so they will have to take responsibility for their actions. You can see where I'm coming from though ? To get 15+ years as a 19 year old is pretty tough. It is a hefty price to pay.

I have not conveyed any sympathy for them nor will I before they are? convicted and sentenced. If they are guilty then i do endorse punishment.

A more relevant question is what do people think their punishment should be if convicted?

For me 30 months in a Peruvian jail and 30 months in Ireland/uk prison would be sufficient punishment/deterrent.
