    From a purely defensive point of view Maldini probably is the best. Fabio Cannavaro was good. Maldini was better. Italy really have produced some incredible players.

    This. There has not been a player like him since he was not just a defensive player had so more to his game could read the game better than anyone and his touch was magnificent.

    Matthaus played in a similar way, although more in midfield for most of his career.

    Matthaus played in 2 Champions League finals, 3 UEFA Cup finals, 2 World Cup finals and was also a squad member in another World Cup final and EURO Championships final.

    I always had Matthaus down as a midfielder he did play in defence mainly sweeper in his later years though. Amazing player.

    In my book Matthaus is one of the best players of my time,loved him,would have classed him more as a midfielder,but i suppose i would need to go back and watch some videos.

    Tony Adams was also an exceptional defender Rio Ferdinand also in his prime was one of the best defenders in Europe.

    Maldini, Baresi and Beckenbauer are all certainly in the top 10. Maldini and Baresi are the two best defenders I've seen play.

    Claudio Gentile was a pretty ruthless defender in his day as well................
