Interesting read. Pele was obviously a top class player but I would be lying if I didn't think he was a bit overrated.

Not overrated to me imo he deserves to be in and amongst the greatest players to play the game. But he is arrogant *.

I did say a bit.:56: Not sure where I'd rank him but he wouldn't be in my top 5.

He is over rated, as a football player he was not good enough to be mentioned in the same breath as Maradona and Messi.

Relate it to the SPL. Maradona/Messi is Larsson, Pele is Kris Boyd.

Aye Messi and Maradona * all over him. So does Zidane. Probably wouldn't be my top 5 either.

A lot of that is nonsence probably written by someone who hates him. The writer even contradicts himself....

"It was Garrincha who singlehandedly won the World Cup for Brazil, not Pelé."

    2 seconds later...

"Pelé shockingly omitted teammates: Gérson, Jairzinho, Gilmar, Tostão, Zito, Bellini and Zagallo. I read into the omissions as Pelé's way of downplaying his teammate's role in his success."

Ehhhhh you just said Garrincha singlehandedly won the World Cup :56:

Bleacherreport isn't my favorite site but he raises mainly good points.

Pele is definitely not the greatest football player that ever lived. The greatest striker and goalscorer perhaps, but not the greatest football player. That accolade goes to either Maradona or Messi, who respectively done more for their team(s) than just score goals.

Of course, Messi arguably still has another 10+ years left in him before he retires and we all know what Maradona contributed at both club and country level.

To put it plainly, Pele is deluded if he thinks he is the greatest player to ever play the game. Both Messi and Maradona * all over him, in terms of pure footballing ability. Messi isn't even a striker, yet still has an absolutely remarkable goals to games ratio.

The only thing Messi has to do now, in my opinion, to solidify his status as the absolute best of all time (even above Maradona), is to win a World Cup or two with Argentina. At club level, he has done it all. By the time he retires, he'll probably have won about 10 European Cups with Barcelona. He's got three already and he's only 24/25.

Garrincha wasn't eligible for the greatest living players list, due to not being alive.

Have never though he was the best tbh. But then I also don't think Maradona was either so I'm probably on LSD.

I'd agree he is overrated, still a fantastic player.

    Messi is the best ever

Aye, he was * right enough!!

Stats can be made out to be anything you want them to be. The facts are though that he was the outstanding player of his era, in an era of greats.

He was so good the Brazil government wouldnt let him move abroad to a european side. Even so his club, Santos, regularly came played top european teams in friendly matches and spanked their arses.

A * of a man no doubt, though his autobiography is a very honest account where he is more generous to the players he played alongside.

For me he is in the top 3 of all time, Maradona at 1st place and Cruyff and Pele just behind him. Messi may make that holy trinity, but that will be when his career is over.

If we are to judge players on what they do and how they act, rather than what they achieve and how they play then the list of greatest players would be sparse indeed.

Maradona was always better imo but I wasn't alive when any of them were playing so I can only go on highlights, of which there are obviously less of Pele.
He defo is overrated though because he played in weak leagues.
