    It was a local outbreak.....local that is to a relatively small part of Africa.The countries that suffered most have small populations.

    Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia have a combined population of just under 20million, (wiki)so id guess it was pretty terrifying to live in those countries during that period.
    Not only that, but for every recorded death there was another patient that went through the ordeal of fighting the disease.
