I know magpies get a bad reputation, here in Sligo if people see a single one they'll say good morning to it before it brings bad luck.I don't believe in that old stuff, but I do think magpies are one of the best looking birds when the morning sunlight hits them showing their colourful plumage.

Yes they are indeed beautiful birds. I go up to the Cairngorms National Park once or twice every year and they are very rare there.
Infact up there all Corvids get a very hard time, even the Raven. However much to the annoyance of a good few Jays have spread there:36:
Mind you up there they try and wipe out Hen Harrier and Goshawk among birds of prey up there, even killing the odd Golden Eagle!!!!
But the good news a lot of people up there are now hitting back. The Grouse driven moors Of course guilty of a lot of nasty killing.
However as seen on Springwatch the massive Glenfeshie Estate is now a safe have and other areas as well:36:

It's lovely down there. My parents went to Sligo every year for the last 20 years or so of their lives. Always went to Hazelwood to see the swans!

Yesterday late afternoon on my local patch yesterday with Ruby Boxer Of course I got cracking close views of the local pair of Kestrels hunting voles on the slope of what I call The View, can see a big chunk of Snowdonia from here. Then the local pair of Peregrine came on the scene behind them.
At midday today on a small Hill I go to sometimes, must go more,Ruby loves it here. Anyway today a Wheatear passed through on the summit and a Whimbrel called as it flew overhead.

Aye,Sligo’s a really diverse county re landscape,it has 2 mountain ranges in the dartry and the ox range,a long coastline and plenty of woodland to explore.
I know the place you mentioned in Hazelwood,it’s called half moon bay on the shores of lough Gill, there’s always a great variety of bird life to see.

Call them the locals, and we've had them since birth...there were 3 or possibly 4 but the neighbors cat definitely nailed one of them.

Handheld mate, it has a setting called 'silky water', takes a few shots to get the effect, had to hold really still though

That's a clever setting,if you are planning to use it often you could invest in a tripod to keep it really still,or prop it up on a stone so it wont move when you're taking the pic, that way the trees and the rocks in the background will come out sharp.
