Some of the best films I've ever watched were films about the Vietnam War. Full Metal Jacket and Apocalypse Now are two films I watch regularly and I also really enjoy Platoon.

Which is your favourite and why?

    This is a tough call.

Between The Deer Hunter and Platoon.

Got to be The Deer Hunter, but it's very close.

    edit.

Full Metal Jacket and Apocalypse Now are fantastic as well.

The first half of FMJ is brilliant, tailed off a bit though in the second half or that probably would have been my favourite.

Two great movies but I'd go for Born on the 4th of July because I prefer based on true story films. Second choice would probably be Full metal jacket but that I just enjoyed watching.

Aye it does tail off a bit towards the end. The first half, when the recruits are in training, is fantastic though.

I've never watched The Deer Hunter yet, I'll maybe have to give that a go.

The Drill instructor in FMJ has some of the greatest lines in movie history.

Once Were Soldiers & Born on the Fourth of July are both missing in action... :icon_mrgreen:

(they are not really, it's just an excuse to ask how could you forget Chuck Norris ? - after all, he's so tough he emerged from his mother's womb riding a Hayley Davidson, with a broken bowie knife bent, from where it was clenched in his vice like jaws!)

I'm like that too. I enjoy films and books that are based on real events.

Forgot to add... the WORST Vietnam War movie is without a shadow of doubt the Duke's 'Green Berets'. What a complete load of crap - looks like it was John Wayne being filmed crawling, walking, hunching, crouching - all in virtually the same spot - in someone's backyard, and that is the best that can be said of it... it's all downhill from there. :38:

I liked BAT 21 with Gene Hackman & Danny Glover...this was based on a true story, not saying it's my fav but it's a no bad movie.
I gonna vote for the Deer Hunter.

Apocalypse Now without a doubt. Not accurate at all, but *....never seen that much atmosphere in a film ever again. And the helicopter attack scene is my favorite action scene ever.

    Second: Deer Hunter...3rd Platoon

I love the way Apocalypse Now ventures into the dark side of the human psyche. Great film.

I absolutely LOVE Vietnam films and history, my favourite nam film is 'Casualties of War' genuinely brings tears to my eyes every time i watch :) Both Michael.J Fox and Sean Penn play blinding roles well worth the watch.

Platoon and Apocalypse Now have to be up there with the greatest films ever.

Tigerland has to be one of the worse nam film ever for me!

Definitely full metal jacket for me. * psychotic but brilliant.

Never actually seen apocalypse now... it's been on TV a few times, just never got round to watching it.

Watched platoon, tigerland, good morning vietnam and the deer hunter, however Full metal jacket is the best for me.

There really is about four of them who could win this poll.

A golden era for film making, pity it was about such a tragic event.

Bit of a contradiction in terms this thread for me!I cant say i actually enjoy any of them....but i do acknowledge some of them as good films.
TBH...i hate Apocalypse Now.....ive watched it more twice completely....and in snatches here and there just to "get it".....and ive given up.Over-rated pish!(think i may need my Full Metal Helmet here!):56:

I love the Deer Hunter up until the Vietnam scenes at the end.Liked the whole blue collar setting and the interaction of the friends.

However if i had to choose which film affected me the most, id have to say it is a film not directly about the Vietnam war, but of the aftermath of the war, in Cambodia....The Killing Fields.

The Killing Fields is really tragic I have to agree.

And the same about enjoying the films, it doesn't seem right really.

The Deer Hunter was such a great character movie, full of immense performances. I'm not surprised to see it in the lead.

I seen a programme recently about John Cazale and of how he was dying of cancer during the making of The Deer Hunter....and of how he was also Meryl Streep's lover.I watched the film again after seeing the programme....(think it was a tribute to Cazale)and it made the whole film more poignant.(as if it needed it!!!)

There was also some mention of how the producers wouldnt entertain his participation because of insurance problems.....and of how De Niro managed to "find a way around" the problem!Supposed to have put up his own money to cover the insurance or something like that!

I watched that programme about Cazale also.

Think it was indeed de Niro who stumped up the cash (or offered his paycheck from the movie) to pay for insurance.

Class touch for a cracking, yet underrated actor.
