Also funny enough my favourite * had something to do with that,Goering wanted the Luftwaffe to get in on the action and convinced Hitler that they could mess things up at Dunkirk. But the logistics * it up.
That is the beauty of the historical side of the 2nd World War,the countless mistakes and errors on both sides.A massive German error was of course invading Russia, just imagine they did not make that huge mistake and put that effort into North Africa and The Middle East.

At first glance you look at this thread and maybe think it's in bad taste, but that is not the case, we laugh at them, make jokes about them, but also it brings about a more serious debate on the subject of war, i've already learned things i didn't know, just from reading some of the posts in here.

Aye the war on two massive fronts * them big time, the Panzer divisions had pushed on that far towards Dunkirk that they had also well outrun the fuel trains. Here is some more details on one massive * up that helped turn the war.

Albert Speer, not a confirmed * but his use of slave labour to keep the German factories in production extended the war by approx 18 months.
Read his book he wrote whilst in Spandau, very matter of fact but not a page turner by any means.

I see your point. In the historical timeline, invading Russia was a mistake, whereas in fact it was the whole point of the war from the outset.
He invaded Poland to get what he needed, a land border with Russia from which he could launch his massive attack in the search for 'living space'.
The master of brinkmanship, the French & British unexpectedly (to Hitler at least) supported Poland. He never expected to fight a war in the west, & much against his generals advice he went ahead with operation Barbarossa.
The rest as they say, is history.

Yes they were in fact simply not ready for a war on this scale in 1939 never mind a 2 fronted one and a stretched one.Funny enough Goering tried to avert the war and said to Hitler if they were to go to war it should from 1942 onwards.
Also when they easily swept through Poland they got carried away on how powerful they really were. Also yes so many alsos and we are breeding hindsight herds here:84: But one classic hindsight is that France sat back and did nothing well the vast bulk of Germany's forces went into Poland.France still had the biggest army in the world at that time, and many German Generals were ready to overthrow Hitler if that happened.
However the rest is history and France sat back and awaited its doom and the Germans got carried away by their success against a very weak Polish Armed Forces set up,but the success made Hitler far too popular to overthrow.

You should look into the Irish famine and Highland clearances thats genocide right there on our doorstep
The British in North Africa outnumbered the Germans 4 to 1 and had air superiotery. A reckon if Rommel had another 2 divisions he would have pushed the British right out of North Africa and the Middle East. Also the Afrika Corps supply issues played a big part in their defeat. Even then it still took the Americans invading from Morrocco before they where finally beaten.

...and losing the source of a considerable amount of the intelligence that Rommel was working with which had given him such an advantage, by being able to know what the Allies plans were and able to counteract them etc. When those intelligence gaps were detected or were redeployed elsewhere suddenly Rommel was not getting the intel and at that point the Allies other advantages were able to overtake them. Rommel was an exceptional general, because he had to know how best to use the intel that was finding it's way to his HQ, and this he was able to do. However without that significant advantage, generaliship can only take an army so far before other factors and disadvantages begin to weigh in against them. This has always been the case, both ancient and modern. The likes of Hannibal, Napoleon, Robert E. Lee and countless other examples can attest.

I've got his book, but the thickness of it is putting me off, and I'm a big reader. I've read many books on the *'s, inc Speer. There's another book written by a lady called Gitta Serene. It's called;'Albert Speer: My battle with the truth'. It's a bit long too, but a good read.

Well, I wouldn't use the term favourite as such but he was an interesting character. How he got the factories up & running again, just days after massive bombing raids was incredible really.
It takes us two weeks to fix a burst water pipe today.
