Had a discussion on another thread about what makes a player become a legend.

For me it is time spent at the club trophies and how good they were as a player.

For me Broony is a legend right now but others think he may not be one yet, although he isn't the best player we've had he's seen us break records and led the team immensely.

People have differing opinions on what makes a legend, some might say the team that stopped the 10 are legends in their own right.

    What do you think?

Commitment to the club, ability and what they’ve achieved with us.

Length of time spent here and commitment. As well as what they won.

I do think it's branded about too often though.

    Scott Brown definitely is one.

Time spent at a club is a dodgy one for me but I know it's obviously important but I don't consider Jackie Mcnamara a legend even though he spent 10 years with us.

Then again it isn't always about trophies. Paul McStay didn't have a career littered with them as such but his ability and sheer commitment to the club made him a legend.

Tierney is he stays is probably the next one to go one and become one.

In a way he has already ensured he won't be forgotten here regardless even this early in his career which is one part of being one.

Obviously not all players who are here for a while will be classed as ones.

Tom Boyd, McStay, Brown though, a big part of their hero status is their length of time spent with the club through different eras.

McNamara is on a different sort of stage. There are cult heroes, guys that will be remembered etc and he comes under that bracket for me.

If James Forrest stays with us till he retires then then he will probably be one of our most decorated players in history and will have been here for let's say 12-15 years but people probably won't class him as a legend, it's a strange one.

I always say Jackie McNamara is the most underrated legend we’ve had. Part of stopping the 10, a big part in our re-emergence in the early 2000’s in Europe, massive part of getting us to a European final, won trophies and captained us.

Forrest and Lustig will go down as legends when they retire. They’ll be a massive part of 10 in a row.

See I wouldn't say Boyd is a legend, Icon yes.
Burns is a Legend. Lennon just misses it for me - but I can see why some will put him in that category.
Think Brown is at the same point as being in/out the Legend bracket - but I believe he will get there.

    Lustig, no chance.
It can't just go down as being part(even the full term) of a ten in a row team. They need to stand out considerably, or at least doing something that carried a team through to something. Such as a great career, but scoring a winning goal that carries us to the next round of CL or something (last 8 for talking sake, or taking us to the EL final, aka Larsson).

Don't get me wrong loved Jackie Mcnamara, I used to wear number 4 for my boys club as I was a RB but as Mr Shelby said above I'd probably class him as a cult hero rather than a legend.

I think the fact he was with us for 11 years and captained the side that stopped 10 makes him a legend. The same way that Brown will.fully cement his place when he captains us to 10.

Boyd might not get in a best ever XI but he was a big part of both a * period and amazing time for us.

He was exceptional when Lennon got to the last 16, set up one of the goals for our first ever away win and has been a stalwart in a Celtic team thats won 7 titles in a row.... And that’s only growing longer.

Not many players in our history have done what Lustig has for us. When he’s left us he’ll go down as one when all is said and done.

Forrest for me yes when we win 10iar, lustig would probably go down as a good servant/cult hero.

Trust me, I kick myself when I don't call them it, because they do exactly what you say. Lennon really should be classed as one, for me. He lived and breathed us before, during and after his time here. Played and Captained us, then managed us. Really silly not to class him as one. But for me there is just something in back of my mind stopping me from labeling him as an out and out legend.

See this is interesting for me because whats the reasoning there?

Commitment? He was here for ten years. 358 appearances for us. Over 50 of them in Europe.

Achievement at the club? 4 league titles,
3 Scottish Cups, 3 League Cups, a European Final, part of the team that stopped the 10, a captain, voted Players Player of the Year in 1998 when we stopped the 10, won football writers player of the year in 2004 whilst he was our captain and best of all, he smashed Mark Hately.

Ability? Definitely one of our best ever right backs and that’s not counting the other positions he played. Not McGrain level but was very, very good for us.

In what criteria would you think he fails to live up to the tag?

Not having a go btw, just find it very interesting.

I don't know tbh, it may be because under Martin O'Neill he wasn't a regular starter at times and maybe flew under the radar or because he wasn't an absolutely outstanding player, he was more workman like or grafter if you will. I think I've maybe been comparing him to Mcgrain which is unfair.
But I've probably being doing Jackie an injustice as now that you've listed all his achievements I think I've changed my mind.
Stick Jackie in the Legends club.
