Ajer isn't experienced. He isn't even a natural CB he's a midfielder. Would you really want to be going into a CL qualifier, against a right good team, with him in defence?

Erik if he regains form is probably even better than Boyata. Lustig has played centre back against Benfica, Barca and Gladbach in the past so well able to cover. Ajers a bit young and inexperienced but is well thought of. O'Connell did well last year in similar circumstances. No need to wet the bed over Boyatas injury.

Have to disagree that he won't be missed. It's not only his defensive qualities, but he helped us win a few games with his headed goals last season. Erik doesn't offer much of a goal threat, even when he's on form.

He's played more top tier games than Eoghan O'Connell and he did well in quals last year

Great chance for Erik to get his act together and get back to his best.

Really hope we have another CB lined up. We desperately need cover in that area for Europe. We'll get away with Erik and even Lustig in the SPL. Real shame for Boyata - I think he was thee surprise of last season - even more so than Armstrong.

BR on Dedryck Boyata injury: "It's disappointing news for us. For the second part of last season he was absolutely outstanding."

BR: "I know what he's like in terms of his mental focus. He'll go away, recover well and work tirelessly to get fit."

One member of the Celtic squad who didn’t travel to Dublin was Dedryck Boyata following the news that the defender was going to miss up to three months with a medial knee ligament injury.

The 26-year-old had enjoyed a fantastic second-half of the season for the Bhoys as they became Invincibles and clinched the domestic treble, leading to a recall to the Belgium squad.

But while it was a blow for the manager to lose such a key member of the side at this stage in the season, he was certain Boyata’s mental strength would see him mount a full and speedy recover from his injury.

“It’s obviously disappointing news for us because in the second part of last season he was absolutely outstanding,” said the Hoops boss.

“It’s a big year for Dedryck with the World Cup but more importantly for ourselves. If there is a good time to have an injury, it’s at this moment.

“I know what he’s like in terms of mental focus. He will go away, recover well and work tirelessly on getting himself fit again and hopefully he will be back around the September period for us.

We have some good centre-halves at the club and we just need to have a wee look at it to see if we need anyone else to come in,” he added.

A big loss, guy really turned it round at Celtic. Showed incredible heart and mental strength I didn't think he had.

We'd get away with Brown, Tierney or Bitton at centre half domestically.

But as you said, Europe is a different story.

Hold on a minute, he hasn't been tested yet. I certainly wouldn't be comfortable having him centre-back against anybody decent.

Dedryck Boyata, who has been out since July with a knee problem, should be alright to return to action next month.
