Platoon is definitely worth watching :50:

Full Metal Jacket, Deer Hunter, Hamburger Hill & even We Were Soldiers all decent Vietnam War films.

MASH is probably as good as it gets in terms of anti-war films made in response to the Vietnam War (although it is set in the Korean War).

Someone mentioned Band of Brothers as a excellent WWII series. Highly recommend ANZACS as another fantastic series, but about WWI.

WWII will do in a few different catagories as there are so many.

Cross of Iron, Devil's Brigade, A Bridge Too Far, The Longest Day & Sink the Bismark are all good shouts.

Fictional WWII capers, such as those penned by Alister MacLain - Where Eagles Dare, Guns of Navarone etc, even the Dirty Dozen, Kelly's Heroes, Von Ryan's Express are terrific movies, but don't quote them for history lessons, haha. Mister Roberts fits into this catagory also.

Contemporary films made during the war itself, such as Casablanca, the Mortal Storm, although fictitious are both pretty good and worth watching.

Foreign: Das Boot, Stalingrad, Der Untergang (aka Downfall) all essential viewing. Life is Beautiful fits in here as well as part of the Holocaust. One of only 2 movies that has ever brought a tear to my eye. Absolutely must see.

POW, can't go past the Great Escape & Bridge on the River Kwai

Dealing with the Holocaust, Schindler's List is immense. Life is Beautiful and The Pianist both highly recommended. Escape from Sobibor (although made for TV originally) is still worthy of a look here. Jakob the Liar and For Those I Loved worth a look also.

WWI - Galipoli. Awesome film. The Lighthorsemen is decent, Lawrence of Arabia, All Quiet on the Western Front (both the silent film and the 1979 remake - it's the story that makes it).

    Boer War - Breaker Morant.

    19th Century

If you are looking for the retelling of a single historical battle, then Gettysburg is absolutely essential viewing. It's a good 4hrs long, but totally worth it. Best American Civil War film, even accounting for the likes of Gone With the Wind.

Charge of the Light Brigade (the 1968 version w/- Trevor Howard et al) falls into the catagory of anti-war film, the way it was presented here, stylisitically might seem dated, but still a very capable entry here. The Punch-esque animation as well as the story itself, really underlining the absurdity of that ill fated venture.

War and Peace, Napoleon & Waterloo all decent films dealing with the Napoleonic Wars.

    Forgot to also mention:

    Come and See
The Big Red One (Samuel Fuller's best by a country mile)
Memphis Belle & the first 10 min of Saving Private Ryan
To Be or Not to Be
    Casualties of War
    Defiance
    Tora! Tora! Tora!
    Apocalypse Now

Films to avoid at all cost:

    Pearl Harbour

Aside from about 40min about half way through this was dire.

    The Green Berets

John Wayne so often sucks on so many levels, but there is nothing redeeming in this. My neighbour's backyard is more believable than what is laughingly supposed to be the jungle of Vietnam in this.

Have you seen 'Legionnaire' with Jean Claude Van Damme? Not a fan of his but enjoy that one, something a bit different.

Always been fascinated by the French Foreign Legion as well.

How can you no be a fan of the Damme, guys class:icon_mrgreen: I've seen Legionnaire and thought it was good but thought I was the only one. Most people I know who seen it didn't like it.

Been years since I seen it, just looked up the cast, as you say there so many well known actors, including Johnny boy:smiley-laughing002: Think I'll give that a watch soon.

Actually not big on those kind of 'action heroes' :smiley-laughing002:

I was when I was younger but can't be arsed with them now. Mel Gibson was always my main man but he's not in the same bracket as a Schwarzeneger or Van Damme...or Big Dolph Lundgren

Legionnaire is good, seen it a few times. I can see why folk would think it's * though:smiley-laughing002:

Van Damme last man standing fighting off Arabs in the middle of the desert, what more do you want.

Same, a was big fan of Mel Gibson as well when I was younger:smiley-laughing002: No just for his big roles in films like Mad Max, Leathal Weapon or Braveheart, but his cheesy * was enjoyable to like What Woman Want and Forever Young:smiley-laughing002:

Mel Gibson's war film The Patriot was great as well.

March or Die is worth a look if the French Foreign Legion is your thing. Gene Hackman and Terence Hill.

The Patriot always made me laugh, thinking this most intrinsically and key moment in American history, with all the resources available, yet could not find 2 Americans for the lead roles, rather finding 2 Australians in Mel Gibson and Heath Ledger, haha.

Speakng of American history, Ride With the Devil also has its moments, and Gods and Generals also, even if it isn't nearly as good as what Gettysburg is.
