Not really, they were both still young and inexperienced making mistakes as well as Gordon in the last 32 especially. Not to mention the step up in challenge going from domestic games where he strolled it to against some very good experienced European strikers.

Barcelona are just at another level. He’s an excellent centre back and maybe the best in EPL but nowhere near the best in the world for me.

Name a player in the world who turns in 9/10 performances in every single game of the season?

I don't believe a single player on the pitch was poor or below average, on either side - certainly not Virgil

I do not subscribe to the perspective that great goals require being deconstructed into the 'errors' that led to them. Great goals are often just that great and often force what some believe are errors. Else, there'd never be a great goal

Virgil van Dijk admits he will be inspired by the memory of Billy McNeill as he tries to emulate the Celtic legend by lifting the European Cup tonight.

The Liverpool star goes into the showpiece against Tottenham aiming to get his hands on the greatest prize in the club game.

Van Dijk is desperate to succeed having lost the Final 12 months ago to Real Madrid.

But the Dutch star will also be motivated to walk in the same shoes as McNeill again having also worn his No.5 at Celtic.

Van Dijk admits he was stunned and saddened when receiving the news last month that the Celtic legend had passed away.

During his time at Parkhead, the centre-back had the honour of meeting McNeill and was fully aware of the ex-skipper’s standing at the club with the pictures of his Lisbon success and the statue on Celtic Way depicting his holding aloft of the trophy.

Van Dijk understood the significance of wearing the No.5 the same as McNeill during his days in Glasgow and thinks it would be an excellent gesture if the number if retired in the future as boss Neil Lennon suggested

On Saturday in Madrid, the former Celtic hero can do what McNeill did in 1967.

Van Dijk said: “I met Billy a couple of times and had chats with him.

When I heard that he passed away, I was shocked and sad. Myself and Robbo [Andy Robertson] spoke about it at the time and we both felt the same way.

“Billy was the famous Celtic No.5. Everyone who has ever walked into the club has seen that picture of him holding the trophy.

“Also, there is the wonderful statue at Celtic Park and he was an amazing man for the club.

Obviously, I didn’t see him play, but I saw all the clips of him on social media and it was sad he passed away.

“If they are going to retire the No.5 shirt, I totally understand why that would happen.

It is great that Celtic would think of doing that and I am honoured I have worn it after Billy.

“He was such a huge name in Scotland and was such a huge player for Celtic. He is definitely a legend forever.”

Say what you want about modern day players.

Big Virgil wanted away in 2014 when deila took over but knuckled down and got on with it even staying until we knew our European fate the following season!

    £2.5m spent

    £21m return!!!
