£6m/£7m/£8m for us would have been ideal.

I couldn't care less how he went about it.

Hopefully he performs as we know he can and someone comes back in for him in January at the same value or higher.

One of the big guns will need a defender come January no doubt and pay a typical massive January fee for him.

Couldn't care less if he's sold and we take in a bit of cash. When are our fans gonna stop celebrating these injections of money and realise it most likely will not be reinvested in team.

It definitely goes to the betterment of our club. We're a PLC with audited annual accounts, all the information is available to anyone. Are you seriously suggesting the board are squirreling away cash for some ulterior motive?

The "Where's the £60m CL money?" brigade have been winding me right up. The money doesn't just go away, it will stay there until we want to spend it. This way we are not relying on qualifying for the CL just to keep our players. No point in breaking the bank in a transfer window where we aren't in need of a rebuild

VIRGIL VAN DIJK has suffered a disastrous return to Southampton duty as he played in the Under-23s side that was hammered 4-0 by Aston Villa.

The wantaway Dutchman featured for all 90 minutes in a humiliating loss at the Bescot Stadium.

Van Dijk failed to get his move to Liverpool through in the last transfer window.

This was the first time he has worn a Saints shirt in competitive action this season.

Two goals in the first 24 minutes from Jordan * put Villa ahead before Corey Taylor and Callum O’Hare added the extras in the second half.

Some 470 hardy souls were in attendance to see the £60million-rated centre-half in action.

His future remains up in the air despite boss Mauricio Pellegrino’s stubbornness during the transfer window.

Reports claim Juventus are plotting a January move for the 26-year-old Holland international.

If i was a player wanting a stepping stone in the epl, southampton would no longer be that club. * getting shafted by them. Should never have signed an extension.

Aye, they've ruined their reputation as a stepping stone to bigger teams over this. Now the next Van Dijk either won't sign for them or if he does won't extend his contract incase he's held to ransom.

I want them relegated now :celt_2:

It's all stemmed from their own bad dealings as well. They're probably absolutley raging that they sold Mane for £30million lat summer, when this season he'd have cost £60million. Same they also lost Wanyama for like £15million as he only had a year left, Wanyama under contract would probably have went for £35-40million.

Seen this game last night. The guy is shocking. Watch him for the 2nd goal let's a 36 year old Crouch tap in, no effort to tackle and does, what I think he does best and that's looks, to blame someone else. If I was a Saints fan I would be ragin at that.performance.

Surprised Southampton had the balls to play him again. As an above poster commented, they've ruined their reputation as a stepping stone club now for the future and will struggle to attract players.

Only saw the highlights but looked like a shocking performance from him. No positional awareness
