I was a vegetarian for 9 years and returned to eating meat in October 2012.

Are you conducting some form of in depth analysis on the matter, if not what was the point in asking this?

Are you a closet vegan wanting support?

I was a vegetarian pretty much all last year at uni. It wasn't completely an ethical decision to start, more a challenge with myself to see how long I could last. It came to an end when I came home and my Mam refused to cook me a different meal to the rest of the family!

I do think though that in many years time when technology can mass produce meat without the need of slaughtering animals, humanity will be looked upon in the same manner as we look at previous generations and their acceptance and practice of slavery, genocide etc.

How hard it is to change depends on your willpower, mate. To be honest, you need to do your research as a lot of foods contain animal products and even some soups in restaurants that don't have meat in them are sometimes cooked with a meat stock. Even Guinness isn't vegetarian as it's made from a collagen that comes from fish.

Sorry to remain vague but the expense of eating isn't noticeably different and I didn't notice any significant difference in terms of how the diet affected me. The main thing about not eating meat or fish just means that you have to make a bit of an effort to get your protein from other sources, which is easy enough to do.

Most restaurants have at least one vegetarian option, so you won't struggle that way but you might be frustrated at the lack of choice, especially in more rural areas. Cities are usually better and you can usually find a couple of vegetarian or vegan restaurants.

Would I recommend it? No. You reduce your carbon footprint by not eating meat, which is a good thing, but you can still eat meat and find other ways to reduce your environmental impact. I probably would have went back to eating meat sooner but, at the time, because I had been vegetarian for so long I was hesitant about eating meat again. I don't miss it at all. There are still days where I don't eat meat as I think it's important to eat things in moderation, but it's got nothing to do with vegetarianism any more. I changed back to being an omnivore because the reasons I had for originally becoming vegetarian no longer applied to me. If you're still reading, sorry I bored you. lol
