A big part of the problem here is the normalisation of the far right across the globe. You have political parties that verbally promote the hate of immigrants and stir up anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim sentiment, and the media are happy to promote them.

What truly horrific news to be waking up to.

Firstly, thoughts are with the families of those that have lost loved ones this day.

Truly tragic. Close to 50 already confirmed dead. Heaven only knows how many wounded. An entire city in lockdown, all on a day when children in the city were campaigning for climate change and a better world for thm to grow up in, while the madness of supposed adults tears communities and families to shreds.

The extent of these attacks, IED's discovered, schools cordoned off and citizens instructed to stay off the streets, so heaven only knows how far this goes. 4 people in custody so far. On the back of any extremist right wing ideology is a sad reflection of society at large, and can only hope that attacks like this will do something other than simply escalate tensions, by highlighting the need for greater understanding, tolerance and respect.

Sadly, there will always be a extremist faction minorities bent on reprisal which can lead to further reprisals. These tensions are not helped by the increase of right wing factions growing in many parts of the world. And even though this attack has materialized on the other side of the world, this effects everyone everwhere. Mistakes of the past and lessons not learned are repeated, while the steady rise in a climate of intolerance of the day is what stokes the hatred on the basis of bigotry, religion or racism can lead to appalling tragedies such as this.

This will leave deep scars on that city, on the Islamic community there, but more than that - on the city as a whole. And despite the vicious and cold blooded nature of any extremist action, such as this, the only thing it serves to highlight a continued lack of tolerance, compassion and understanding in the world. That violence begets violence is a sad reflection on how far we still have to go as a species, before the day comes reality, that the hopes of those thousands of school kids were campaigning for can come to pass and lead to a better world.

Meanwhile Israel launched 100 airstrikes on Gaza last night, probably killing several dozen innocent muslims, difference is our tax pounds paid for this, so it has very little coverage or condemnation from the west.

Aint it funny how nearly every time Israel launches a major attack there seems to be some kind of "major" incident elsewhere?
