Was having a disscussion last night down the pub two questions came up one serious and one not so serious:
A united ireland thinking with your head and not heart does anyone think any of us will see it in our life time? Leads me on to my next question not so serious but if it were to happen how would all of you celebrate(If that is you think it would be a good thing)

I think in the current climate, anything could happen. I intend to be celebrating on O'Connnell Street, Dublin when the big day finally happens!

I think we will see a United Ireland in the not too distant future. Certainly demographically the gap is closing and the Irish population is close to the 50-50 mark. Once the 50-50 mark is passed the pressure will increase. There is a ways to go though and the first step is getting the Stormont power sharing government working. This isn't going to happen any time soon as it seems the Unionists have to be forced kicking and screaming every step of the way. But over time the pieces will fall into place and to use a Michael Collins phrase I think the power sharing and all the cross border bodies will prove to be but stepping stones to a United Ireland.

no dont see it any time soon....i hope im wrong but with the the current sitution with the northern ireland assembly and the fact that two years ago a vote was taken in the dail to see who would want the north the majority voted against the idea because it would cause to much conflict and would upset the balance of the republic.

if it does happen il be celebrating it in the city centre like most newry people

I think it's just as possible as it is that violence will return. It all depends on what the new generation wants to do... if they've been brought up in a sectarian way then it won't be good, but if they've been brought up open-minded then I think it could happen. It's very hard to judge what people who haven't ever had their voice heard will do.

    I agree Diegan

There isn't really a peace in Ireland at the moment, it is more an absence of war. A proper peace requires the actual potential for conflict to be removed, so until the British presence is removed there can't be ever lasting peace.

i doubt we'll see it for at least 40 years. and it will be down to economics, if it's better for both economy's then it will happen, it'll never happen if it damages either economy. i'd be outside the G.P.O if it ever happens

i think its inevitable. It will happen eventually at some point, once the majority vote in NI is held by the catholic side, then its up to the south then to agree to the united ireland.

It would be a dream come true to see it happen.

10 years on from the OP with everything that has went on since and in the midst of a constitutional crisis caused by Brexit, in your head do you see a United Ireland within your lifetime?

    I'm 29 and I do.

It won’t happen. The people of Ireland are too intelligent to fall for the lies and deceit of Sinn Féin.

The gerrymandering has started again but this time it's not a matter of keeping the nationalist out but to try to maintain the unionist majority. Only a small area of the 6 counties now has a unionist majority.

you've got to ask, will the people of the republic want it ?

to do so would bring (IMO) violence to the streets of Dublin, Belfast, Cork and everywhere else.

There won't be reunification until London wants shot of the north and Dublin actually wants it back.
