UEFA are preparing to roll out a third European club competition from 2021/22 pending the final approval from the executive committee, European Clubs Association executive Andrea Agnelli has confirmed.

The move has been in the pipeline for some time as Uefa looks to maximise the commercial potential of its top sides while continuing to reward domestic success with continental competition.

Agnelli was speaking at the general assembly of the ECA, a group that represents the interests of the continent's biggest teams but works closely with Uefa on a number of issues.

He said: "Pending approval of the Uefa executive committee, the 'green light' has been given to introduce a third competition.

"This would bring the overall number of clubs in European competition to 96, as of the 2021/22 season."

Approval is expected to be a formality, with another competition sure to boost Uefa's already huge revenue.

    * uefa. Their primary interest in the big 5 leagues. They are only throwing the rest scraps to try to keep them from revolting. The sooner all the leagues outside the top 5 get together and take on uefa the better

    * uefa

Cup winners Cup type thing ?

That would be a highly original idea ...

I wonder if it will be three separate competitions, taking place on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays? A (genuine) Champions League, a competition similar to the CL now but without the league winners and lastly a Europa League competition.

    That could be quite interesting...

Their only interest is to get as much TV, advertising and sponsorship money into the trough as possible, so they can gorge themselves even more.

The only way to stop their rampant capitalism destroying the game even further is for people to stop buying the TV packages that fund them and possibly boycott their sponsorship partners.

If things keep going as they are then there will be more historical football clubs that sell their souls to the devil, price out their working class supporter base and end up packed to the rafters with tourists glued to smart phones for the full 90 minutes.

Doesn't bother me in the slightest this being introduced.

Definitely a good thing for smaller clubs.

Smaller clubs in which leagues though?

I can see them pushing for mid-table Premiership, La Liga, Bundesliga teams to get into this competition. Cash is King to UEFA and clubs in small countries like Croatia, Bosnia, Sweden etc. won't pull in large TV audiences or sponsorship deals.

Will add to the coffers of teams like Hudersfield Town and Wolves who are already bloated with all their cash from sky. Uefa do not operate for the good of football but to make the rich even richer and bow to their masters in the big 5 leagues. Uefa are an anti football organisation only interested in cash

Exactly. Anyone thinking this will be a throwback to the Cup Winners Cup with decent European Ties between genuinely big teams there on merit is kidding themselves on.

It'll be a diluted Europa League with an opportunity for the likes of your Everton, West Ham, Bournemouth then mid-table La Liga teams like Sociedad, Celta Vigo etc.

Anything that helps the smaller sides in our league be in Europe for longer and get more revenue am all for the aim should be to make our smaller clubs more viable place to ply your trade than say position 6 onwards in the English championship and longer runs in Europe would help do that for those teams

This will essentially mean 16 places in europa league are getting demoted to a 3rd competition with 16 more places added. might mean more places for clubs in smaller league in 3rd competition but will be used to justify champions league and europa league being more of a closed shop I fear.

Not against a 3rd competion in principle just feel it will end up being more like a intertoto cup than a cup winners cup

It will be used to keep clubs like us out of the Champions League which is where we belong.

    No thanks.

No if it's just another comp for teams from the big 5 leagues they won't. The only ones that will be happy will be the ones from the big 5 leagues in that case. Dunno how * can say it'll be a good thing when no * even knows what the proposal is :56:

No I am not. Go back and read the thread. I was responding specifically to an individual and what he said about the teams from the big 5 countries and you jumped in and made a * of it. The only opinion I have offered is that I can't see it resulting in a genuine European cup and that if it is only going to favour the big 5 leagues many won't be interested in European football but you just crack on pal.
