Really want to get back into this but will wait until my housebuild has been completed hopefully next month and one of the rooms that will be turned into an office will be the perfect place to store all the family history including BMD certificates.

Gives me a perfect excuse to travel abroad to do family research. I know of at least 3 that went abroad.
One to USA and 2 to Australia.
No, not on the prison ships.

Funnily enough I got my results from a DNA test this morning.

    68% Irish, Scottish or Welsh.
    20% Scandinavian.
    12% Iberian.

Very interesting, considering my Mum’s side are all English, yet my DNA indicates no English in it at all.

It’s a shame that it can’t break down the Irish, Scottish or Welsh one into individual countries though...

    DNA: 67% Irish and Scottish
    21% Scandinavian
7% western Europe (Germany, Netherlands etc)

On my da's side, I'm descended from Kellys and McElenys from Mayo, Carneys and Dawsons from Donegal (all Catholics), and Campbells and Hanns, staunch prods from Monaghan. All seem to have come to Scotland roughly same time and working in pits in Wishaw, Hamilton area. The first Kelly to come over, my great great whatever granda, ended up dying in the Hamilton Poorhouse, as did his son when he was older.

Norwegian side of my ma's family were farmers and whalers from the Sandefjord area, mostly around Stokke, Botne and Andebo.

I've also found out I have an absolute * tonne of cousins in America and Canada, on Irish, Scottish and Norwegian sides

Done my family tree a few years ago,all four grandparents families originated in Ireland.donegal,Tyrone, down are the counties I managed to find family connections to,but can’t find the ancestral home of my da’s family.

It really gets addictive as each question you answer opens up another batch of questions.

A good forum to join is rootschat, it’s a free site for folk researching their ancestors and there is a wealth of people with great knowledge of all things genealogical.
It’s really a great hobby to take up.

As well as doing mine, my Auntie did one as well (Dad’s sister). The idea was I’d be able to separate both of my sides with my results.

I obviously didn’t inherit every strand from my Dad, as there was a couple that flagged up that aren’t in my DNA. Namely:

    2% Finnish
    2% Nigerian

Whereas the rest was 96% Irish, Scottish or Welsh.

Funnily enough then that makes me more Nigerian than English going by the ancestry!

    :56:

The main question is, how the * did a Nigerian get to County Mayo?!

I’ve had a quick look on the site and can’t really find anything regarding reliability.
