Okay, so what are you basing that rather bold statement on? Bear in mind we are talking about the recognised greatest goalscorer in football history. A player who has been lauded on all continents by all associations and has been deified by most of the worlds best players as one of the greatest ever footballers.

In your opinion he wouldnt score as many as Ronaldo or Messi?

Perhaps in 40 years a young Mystic will be on here saying, "Aye, that Messi was okay, but defences wirnae as good in those days, there was more emphasis on attack.".

I'll take the opinion of footballing experts, footballing greats and that of my own eyes if thats okay. :icon_mrgreen:

You say most people, but thats not true is it? Otherwise he wouldnt regularly be voted as one of the greatest players of all time. Surely if most people thought he was overrated...well, he wouldnt be voted anywhere near it.

Its pretty much a minority of people who would think he was over rated.

Pele never scored 72 goals in a season like Messi so I fail to see how he could do it today .With a better standard of player.

    Nostalgia blinds people.

    i agree with this

same with people thinking Joe Ledley is underrated, yet hes constantly lauded by our support, showing the fact that he is not underrated at all, same principle really

And thats fine, I have no problem with that, but I think you would struggle to find one of these same experts who suggest that Pele was overrated right?

I dont think Pele was the greatest either by the way. But his impact on the game was immense.

Perhaps there isnt as much emphasis on defending today as their was in Pele's time then.

I'm basing it on the fact he never scored 72 goals in a single season.

The footballing experts and footballing greats that on mass think Messi is the best? You do that mate. :50:

Your turning this into a Messi v Pele debate mate. I have no problem with anyone suggesting that Messi is the best ever. What your suggesting is that Pele was overrated, when he clearly was'nt. These same experts that think Messi is the greatest would mock anyone who suggested Pele was overrated.

That's what makes Messi 72 goal achievement freakish. He's doing it in a time where there's a lot more emphasis on defending.

i dont think thats really true, is it?

Brazilian football has a rich history of Attacking football, and considering he didnt play anywhere else while he was in his prime, you have to think that he was playing attack minded opposition

Never said he was underrated. I said he was bit overrated as in top ten not top 5. Which is hardly a bad thing.

I was being a little sarcastic there. The point I am making is its just as ridiculous to belittle Messi's acheivements as it was for Pele's. If it was so easy in Pele's day to score, how come no-one got near the amount that he did?

And rightly so, for anyone to suggest that Messi's goals were down to poor defending would be talking *.

For a taste of what Pele had to put up with, check out the Brazil games in the 66 world cup where he was kicked off the park.

He was also not allowed to play outside Brazil either. It was the law!!

Scored against every big team he played too

    1 goals in 2 games V Italy
    1 goals in 2 games V Yugoslavia
    1 goals in 3 games V England
2 goals in 3 games V West Germany
    4 goals in 4 games V Czechoslovakia
    3 goals in 3 games V USSR
    3 goals in 3 games V Sweden

thats true i suppose, i think the only thing you could say about Pele's achievements is, that he playeed ALOT of game sin the Campeonato Paulista, which is the state championship of Sao Paulo only, now in this there is often weaker teams, way below the level of Santos, and i think the fact that Pele had more goals than games in this competition 9 seasons in a row shows this, so when coming upa gainst these significantly weaker teams, his goal tally would have been boosted significantly

but then again....Barcelona are alot better than most of the spanish teams :56:

that said, id suggest the gap in quality is lesser than the gap between the Santos of the 60's and various Sao Paulo State sides

Pele is one of the greates players of all time, not the greatest but up there. Although it is telling how very few of his teammates are big defenders of his
