    Did he really though?

When Pele played Brazil were the best team in the world and all of Brazils players played in Brazil.

He only played 3 competitive games against European Clubs in the World Club Championship and he scored 7 goals, 3 V Benfica, 2 V Benfica and then 2 V AC Milan. His goalscoring record against European teams is twice as good as his domestic record.

Thats a little bit of an uneducated comment. The Brazillian league of Pele's era was def not a weak league. There is every chance that if they played in Europe they would have horsed everyone they came up against. The Brazil winning sides of that era were full of Santos players.

    :50:

In Pele's time the best forwards were probably him, Eusebio and Muller. Eusebio and Muller are probably still two of the top 5 forwards to have ever played in Europe yet back then saying either of them were better than Pele would be like saying now that Silva is better than Messi or Nani is better than Ronaldo.

Some good points and some not so good IMO. Thing is it's very easy to hate on Pele because he's an arrogant tool who appears to actually know nothing about football.

It definately wasn't a weak league, that Santos team that he played in was one of the best around from what I've heard. I do think that Pele is overated, due to the amount of goals he has supposedly scored. There is no doubting he was an outstanding player though.

One of the best ever? Not for me. Messi, Maradona and Zidane imo were, and are better players than him.

Defences weren't as good back then. As good as the attacking football was.

Thats fair. I think in more recent times he has been a bit of a political tool in footballing terms, simply because he is so high profile.

I remember Pele, just about, from when I was a kid, and his impact on World Football was immense. At a time when there were few live games, no internet and nowhere near the same exposure, EVERY person in the world knew who Pele was.

When we look at how quickly and easy players are lauded , even mediocre ones, a player of Pele's stature in the game would be immeasureable.

Its very difficult to say who is the best player of all time, we can all have opinions, but thats all they are. What we can say for certain is that players are the best of their ere. Pele in his, Cruyff in his, Maradona in his, and now Messi in his.

The "who is best" debate will just go on.

    But its Maradona. :icon_mrgreen:

What stat are you basing that on?

Defenders got away with murder until recent times. South Americans were notoriously the most brutal as well.

In Italy the cattanachio defence system was the art form of its day.

They might have got away with more but less emphasis was put on defending.

Its a lot harder to score today. Than it was back then is what I'm getting at.

Again, I dont see how you figure that one out. Less emphasis was put on defending? Italy invented Cattanachio as a successful footballing system in the 60's, that Celtic managed to overcome in 67. Ths system was copied by many teams, not just in Italy. And you may want to watch the 1966 World Cup to see the brutal treatment of Pele from the national teams he played against.

And if its a lot harder to score today, how come players are still scoring by the shed load?

Some great players played though during Pele's career and he's seen as the undisputed best of the lot.... Infact probably Scotland, England, Ireland, Czech, Portugal, Germany and Holland's best players, aswell as the best Eastern European player of all time all played at the same time as Pele and none got near him.

Maradona is seen as the best as he was seen to be better than guys like Zico, Platini, Socrates etc

Pele is seen as the best as he was better than guys like Di Stefano, Puskas, Cruyff, Eusebio, Garrincha, Best, Charlton, Muller, Seeler, Nordahl, Beckenbauer etc

Messi and Ronaldo are the only two players in the world that score what I would consider a shed load on a consistent basis.

Pele wouldn't get near their goal scoring tally's if he played today.

Can only agree with that, though to be fair, he is 71.

    Why not?

Players like Rooney, Van Persie, Gomez, Huntelaar, Ibrahimovic, Di Natale, Benzema and Falcao are all scoring 30+ this season.

To think the likes of Pele, Di Stefano, Seeler, Nordahl, Puskas etc who played back then wouldnt be scoring a lot more than that is just madness.
