Great Italian centre halves, it's a cliché for a reason.

Even ones who were full-backs were better centre-halves that most other countries have produced Maldini, Gentile and Bergomi.

What a fabulous footballer Maldini was. Consummate professional that surpassed his magnificent father. My favourite footballer of all time.

I don't want to go over the same old names as everyone else but Moore, Baresi and Scirea were a bit special, and I'm happy to add Maldini to that list, although I always think of him as a full back.

One player who hasn't been mentioned who I really admired as a kid was Ipswich Town's Kevin Beattie. Possibly because of his problems with injury, he never seems to get the recognition he deserves.

And as someone who spent a lot of time watching Everton, I'd like to throw Kevin Ratcliffe into the mix.
