Thinking about the real lack of quality in this position at the moment, opposed to what it was like when I was younger, historically is just the ones I watched regularly, so no Baresi and co.

    Currently

    1) Diego Godin
    2) Sergio Ramos
    3) Gerard Pique
    4) Virgil Van Dijk
    5) Thiago Silva

    Historically

    1) Paolo Maldini
    2) Allesandro Nesta
    3) Fabio Cannavaro
    4) Jaap Stam
    5) Marcel Desailly

They were all really around the same era, the historical ones, so much more defensive quality late 90's early 2000's. What about everyone else?

I'd say your spot on with the choices mate, though I'd put Thiago Silva second, Ramos 3rd and Pique after Virgil. Totally forgot about Godin.

It's down to the tactics in the game now, everybody wants to play fast, attacking, expansive football, which imo should mean a bigger need for a quality defence but it seems to be neglected.

Aye, Godin is what I'd call a 'proper' centre back. Can still play a bit though. The defenders these days are more interceptors, powerful fast runners to cover. Positioning and tackling is a secondry option it seems.

The positioning of them was hard to do, Silva's last purely because the last 4/5 times I've watched him he hasn't had the best of games. I'm not a massive fan of French football though.

Aye Godin is hard as nails. He's a bit if a throwback to the guys you mentioned.

I'm not a massive fan of French football either to be fair mate, just basing it on when I have seen him, he's been quality. I haven't watched PSG this season though.

Although i agree. Centre backs these days are not a patch on days gone by. They play more like midfielders these days.

Can also add Costacurta, Kohler, Carvalho, Thuram, Blanc and Vidic to the recent historical list.

I used to think it was just because he was so good here that we regarded him so highly, but he genuinely is one of the best about just now.

How so mate? He's been head and shoulders above the Premiership, there's a reason your talking £40m odds for him in January just now.

Can't think of many that are much better than him. I was going to have him ahead of Ramos as well because he's less of a liability.

I was 50/50 between Desailly and Thuram for 5.

Carvalho is a belter of a shout though.

Only defender on Virgils level in the epl is Alderweireld.

Mad to think Southampton could have both playing for then right now if they had went for the full transfer instead of loan a few years ago.

Pepe deserves to be in the current top 5 imo, let down with his disciplinary problems obviously ...

Godin is my favourite CB by quite a bit, as you say he is an old school type defender but is still good enough in this day, he is as tough as they come also he always plays on with broken noses head cuts or any type of injury, and fans love seeing that a player that just keeps going.
