Forgive me if there's a thread already, but I've been watching videos of the Brazilian over the past few months, and I honestly never realised just how good he was.

The close control and fast feet are among the best I've ever seen in world football. I never gave him the credit he obviously deserves.

    What a player.

He’s the man that got me obsessed with football. I loved Celtic already but his performances in the France 98 World Cup had me * mesmerised.

Had never witnessed anything like it. If not for his 2 knee injuries, injuries that would have derailed other careers, he would be known as the only real competition for the greatest ever for Messi.

Madness to think what might have been if not for injuries, given what he achieved in the game even with those problems. He was unplayable when he was in full flow.

Most complete out and out striker of all time?

He’s in the debate anyway and his only real con in that argument is his lack of longevity.

Not even sure about that, lack of longevity at his blistering best? From 96-97 when he scored 49 goals in a season for Barca till about 05-06 he was always in top 3 strikers for me.

6 years between that Barca season and his unreal display at the 2002 world cup as well.

Even when he was fat and out of shape he was world class.

His nickname as “The phenomenon” is well deserved. A truly elite footballer.

In comparison with Messi that’s half as long as he’s been the elite of the elite.

But then it’s unfair to compare anyone to him I suppose. In terms of proper number 9’s hard to think of other that’s done it over a longer period in the modern eras. You need to go back to your Pele’s and DiStefano’s.

Messi’s a freak of nature, definitely.

Even the likes of Shevchenko, probably... what 6/7 years at the very top for him? Which is also a long time in football.

Thierry Henry? Even at that the last few years at Barca he wasn’t a centre forward, Samuel Eto’o was.

There’s 2 phases to Ronaldo’s career though, pre-injury where I’d compare him to Messi. A godlike figure in football that you just don’t know how to deal with. And post injury, a completely world class striker.

Gerd Muller a little bit later and i would have Raul as one of the best also.

I totally agree. Messi is incomparable to anyone.

I’d agree that Ronaldo is the best 9 of all time too.

Pele and De Stefano played their best football as 10’s. Gerd Müller is closest to Ronaldo imo.

Funny thing is, I was never a massive fan of Raul even though he was undeniably unreal.

I was the same with Cannavarro.

Hated him because he played for Real, but what a striker though he looked totally uninterested at times.

Raul reminds me of Benzema a bit.

He was just always there for Madrid and always scoring but never really discussed.

He couldn’t score against Jim Leighton

    Willie Falconer did

    Falconer > Ronaldo

Aye, definitely mate. Maybe not as much as he deserves to be nowadays but at the time definitely.

Was always Shevchenko, Crespo, Henry, Raul etc. with Ronaldo undisputed until after his injuries.

    Genuinely never heard it.
