It was a team barely good enough to be at the 2nd level depleted through injuries and Roy Keane. I agree that it was not as bad as people were making out

We are going nowhere, we just don’t have the players anymore sadly.

O’Neill should have left after the Denmark game, for his own sake.

Of the team that went to Cardiff and beat Wales in a WC qualifier this time last year:

    Rep of Ireland
    • 23 Randolph - played last night
    • 2 Christie - played last night
    • 20 Duffy - played last night
    • 3 Clark - played last night
    • 17 Ward - played last night
    • 22 Arter - fallen out with Keane
    • 10 Brady - injured
    • 18 Meyler - on bench
    • 13 Hendrick - played last night
    • 11 McClean - injured
    • 8 Murphy - retired
Seamus Coleman was back to captain the team.
John O'Shea has retired but wasn't first choice.
Shane Long is injured, his international career is winding down anyway IMO.

The player turnover hasn't been huge. That's worrying IMO. There is very little coming behind the current crop

It was generally believed during Martins successful time with Celtic that he depended on John Roberston to set out the tactics for the game prior to KO and during the game itself. Martins main strengths it was said was his skills in man motivation.
It'd a shame to see him struggling, but maybe it is time for a change and perhaps more thought should have been given before offering him a new contract.

Tactics and that were all O’Neill. Robbo dealt with training more, set piece plays etc etc.

I have posted before about how our national team has been in serious decline for some time now really since the mid 2000's at the least. The facts are for decades the FAI have all but totally abdicated their role in nurturing and creating the right environment for our best young players to grow into top level pros. They just let the haphazard underage non professional structure deal with things and then the best players would go off to England or Scotland and they would take care of turning our young talents into top pros. Then the TV money poured in and year by year as that changed the game and foreign investors took over various clubs over the water they started to bring in the top talent from all over the world even into their academy teams. The young Irish players already unprepared technically and tactically compared to top foreign teenagers started to get pushed down into smaller and smaller clubs and hence we end up where we are with a squad full of at best average players at the international level.

On top of this we have seen our managers adopt a very direct and defensive tactical approach to games for the most part. This could be maybe justified if we had a decent enough talent pool to make those conservative type tactics workable but the facts are we do not and the great run through the 2016 European Championships was really just a blip. Other then that for a long time Ireland has been a very limited team which has depended on defending, scoring on set pieces and general stopping other teams rather then anything positive. This just is not the way to play in the modern era of the game. You cannot expect to have long term consistent success if your not willing to try and play and be positive with keeping the ball in the modern game in general. For me not only is the talent pool currently dreadful easily the worst since the mid 1970's but we just don't even attempt to play.

I think at this point we need to have a re set and right from the ground up with the new underage national leagues our underage national teams and into the full national team we need to start to play a modern possession based game and focus on really developing our young kids technically and create an environment where in the future we can again consistently produce top level pros. Players who have an excellent technical education in the game which will allow them to succeed then tactically at the top level as they become pros. This switch in mentality will likely see us lose games in the short term but we are going nowhere anyway and for me the time is now for a total reset on the mentality of who we are as a football nation. The days when blood and thunder and give it a lash etc will work are long gone not to mention it isn't fun to watch even when your winning and even more so when your not. We need to believe in ourselves and believe we can develop a team of players who can actually play in a modern positive manner that excel both technically and tactically. We are a small nation certainly but we have the ability to make this happen but we have to put a stop to the current structures and mentality from top to bottom.

    OK rant over!

Can't see us not getting relegated to league C unfortunately.

That’s probably our level and maybe a better place to build from

Sadly your both more then likely correct. Some dark days ahead it looks like. I just wish we were at least trying to change our culture as a footballing nation so at least we would be working for a better future.

O'Neill seems to be claiming Ward wasn't present at training when the alleged fallout happened, but that it is him speaking in the clip

“That Irish line-up looks like it came from a football computer game that’s without an official licence,” says Paul Fitzgerald.
