Ireland will wear a kit containing the rainbow flag colours of the LGBT movement in their international friendly with the United States this weekend.
The FAI announced that the numbers of the back of the player's shirts will be filled with the colours of the rainbow flag instead of the traditional white.

Martin O'Neill's side take on the United States in a friendly in Lansdowne Road on Saturday, and the FAI announced tonight that the side will wear the special kits in a show of solidarity with the LGBT community.

Irish football's governing body said that the gesture demonstrated their support for the LGBT movement, and forms part of UEFA's 'Equal Game' initiative.

"Not just a number, this is a statement. Ireland, supporting LGBT rights," the FAI wrote on their official Twitter account this evening

Didn't know about this tonight but makes sense as I did see a story the other day about one of the US Womens players saying she refused to play when the US team did a similar thing.

Aye I seen that aswell mate, I wouldn't be surprised if this is a response to that tbh. June is Pride month as well as June was when the Stonewall Riots happened so Ireland might just be doing it for that.

The player in question is Jaelene Hinkle she plays in the Womens pro league in the US for North Carolina Courage. She has not been called up since she refused to play for the US because of the US wearing jersey's numbered in the LGBTQ manner like was done in yesterdays game. She claims it is for religious reasons. Cloaking hate in so called freedom of religion is pretty common place in the US for those who need a screen to hide their hate behind.

Not surprising. The Yanks are aw * backwards.

As the man above said, they use their conservative religious views as a vehicle for intolerance that they don’t even understand is intolerant :giggle1:

Don't know if anyone caught this on Newstalk last night.

Live panel in Vicar Street looking back at Euro 88 30 years on and then a look back at the Seville run 15 years on.
Great listen/watch. Have posted the YouTube link below but it's available as a podcast on iTunes etc search 'The Football Show on Off The Ball'.

As the 2018 World Cup looms, we had an anniversary to celebrate here in Ireland: the Boys in Green's first ever major tournament.

It's 30 years since Ireland made its major tournament bow at Euro 88 and tonight, Ireland legends Ray Houghton, Ronnie Whelan and Kevin Moran were with us at Vicar Street for the OTB Roadshow in association with BoyleSports to reminisce and look back at their own contributions to a summer that saw Ireland beat England en route to almost making it to the semi finals.

Plus, we were also joined by Celtic legends Alan Thompson and Jackie McNamara to talk all things Hoops related.

In addition, Ireland and Leeds legend John Giles was also be on hand.

Another Boyata. See if I was England manager I'd tell him he's not wanted by them either, see what he thinks of never being an international. Rat.

FORMER Ireland midfielder Graham Kavanagh has revealed how the English FA have targeted his own son, an Irish youth international, in their bid to land dual-eligibility players such as Declan Rice.

But Kavanagh, who feels that the FAI should end their interest in Rice following his decision to withdraw from the squad for next week’s competitive international in Wales, says there’s no way his son, Middlesbrough forward Calum, will play for England.

“My son was asked to represent England but there was no chance. He said he’s completely Irish,” Kavanagh said of Calum, who made his debut for the Irish U15s earlier this year.

“The fact that Declan Rice has played for Ireland and the way his career has developed, England came calling. You know who you are and where you are from from an early age.

“It was never a case of my son considering playing for England. They approached the club and asked if he’d play, straight away we said no.

“If Calum doesn’t play for Ireland he won’t play for anyone else, he’s not going to hedge his bets, he knows he is Irish, he has been over to play for the Irish youth team four times, he can’t wait to get over."

Always liked Kavanagh going back to watching him playing for Boro along with Curtis Fleming back in the day. Both always gave 100% whenever they played.

These players might only ever be back up to the England team, Rice has huge competition if he chooses England, even the talented lad with the huge ego and bad attitude at Villa might only ever be back up for England. Often these lads are 3rd generation their grand parents were Irish so they will often feel far more English than they do Irish and playing for England gives you huge exposure and sponsors and so on you will earn more money. It's rare you find a young English lad that has grandparents who are irish that links himself to Ireland and feels a deep connection these days. It is annoying though as these players should never have chosen to play for Ireland youth in the first place if they were going to leave as soon as England came calling as it feels like some of these players are using Ireland as a feeder team to England.
