Just saw it two nights ago.

Thought it was very good. It's always hard to live up to the hype of the first three movies, but if this had been the first of the series I would have liked it just as much.

Some of the details in the movie are different than the book, but I think it adds to the story. The more Jackson takes from the mythology the better the movies will be

I absolutely cannot believe some people are saying it is one of the best films of the year or better than LOTR. It was ok at best, pretty boring, almost nothing exciting happens. The atmosphere throughout the entire film was way too lighthearted, even in moments of danger, like with trolls, which was a dreadful scene. If it werent for the success of LOTR, this film would be getting slated.

pretty much sums it up for me, seemed like a kids movie, the original lotr had me on the edge of my seat but this was far too slow moving and light hearted, didnt think it was great tbh. Visually stunning but lotr shites all over it.

Sat through all 3 extended versions of LOTR last weekend. About 10 hrs worth. My * was numb.:icon_mrgreen:

Then went to see The Hobbit last night.
Brilliant movie. Yes, it's a kids movie. So * what. It's excellent nonetheless.
Don't think it should be a trilogy, though. 2 movies, yes, but not 3.

Great film. Some outstanding scenes and gives Middle Earth and the LOTR trilogy more depth. Just wish Peter Jackson never listened to the * that told him to do over the top comedy gags from The Two Towers onwards.

People saying this is light hearted in tone compared to The LOTR have overlooked the fact that this is also the case with the books.

Took my 2 sons to see it last night, we all enjoyed it. The 5 year old managed to sit for the whole film without moaning once so they must have done something right.

    Totally agree.
The Hobbit was actually written for Tolkein's children along with some other books and he wrote LOTR at time or just before start of world war 2 for a more * market.

Thought it was tremendous, captured my imagination as if I was a wee boy again. It was visually stunning and the humourous parts were well timed. Going to go see it again tonight.

Have you read it? It's a lighthearted book. A lot of funny bits throughout. Thought he captured the sense of the book quite well.

LOTR The Fellowship of the Ring was fairly lighthearted as well.

Aye ive read the book, but thats besides the point. Even when the dwarves and bilbo and gandalf were in dangerous situations, you just never get the sense of danger because the atmosphere was to lighthearted. Another criticism i have is that i akmost forgot bilbo existed in some parts of the film, he was just totally excluded for long periods of it.

You could try and get the book in audio form. Great for those with reading difficulties or for those whose native language isn't English.

Back from the cinema, thought it was good, good not brilliant.
Well paced, lots of action and humour and its always good to see some of the faces from LOTR, nice inclusion of the necromancer too, interesting to see how that one gets played out in the second movie.

    Overall a very good 7.5/10
As always the scenery/music/effects were stunning.

I thought that was the point. Don't know how to explain it well but like he's not really seen or heard then he turns into the hero.

In one film Bilbo is already a much better character than Frodo was in 3. One thing I liked about Bilbo was that he was genuinely lost in a company of dwarves he cannot relate to on a quest he doesn't fully understand.

I don't really agree about the "sense of danger" complaint. Aye you knew the dwarves were always going to make it out alive but unlike the LOTR trilogy battles they never felt like a group of great warriors who could swashbuckle their way through hordes of wargs and orcs without struggle or skating down ramps slaying many massive orcs (goblin cave aside).
