Look at the money. Only 2 teams in world football outside England who got more money than huddersfield from TV rights last season were Barca and Real Madrid. Why would a boy like Turnbull, who isn’t a Celtic fan, want to sign for us for 10-15k a week when he can move a few hours down the road and get double that without these teams batting an eye.

Look at the European coefficients, I would fancy us to beat any team from any league below us on the rankings, and teams from leagues that are above us have the added bonus of being from a country that produces quality players such as Switzerland and Holland. Not much can be done when Celtic are already by far and away producing the best Scottish talent but it’s still nowhere near the levels of these countries.

Because some players understand the importance of playing the 'long game' both in financial and development terms.

I posted this on another thread, Dembele had scored 17 goals in the English Championship for a poor Fulham side and had Spurs sniffing about him at the time. If his decision was based solely on financial terms then going to a team like Spurs would be far more attractive than coming to Celtic. Had he done that though he'd likely have been warming the bench behind Kane & Son. Instead he took the plunge to come north to ourselves and spend 2 years playing games, winning trophies, playing and scoring in the Champions League which all aided his development. He then moved on to bigger wages at Lyon and after another good season is now being touted for a possible move to Man United, Liverpool or Arsenal, which will undoubtedly be for a lot more money again.

If he went to Spurs there's no chance he would have developed as much as he has with the regular game time and pressure to perform at ourselves.

The same path has been charted by the best centre back in the world, Dutch Captain, Champions League winner and guy that's now on over £150k per week.

That’s why we got guys like that but. We’ll still make signings but it’s not as easy as it was for us even a few years ago. Dembele we were able to sign because we could invest what we saved in compensation to pay him high wages.

The next Dutch centre half that’s as highly rated as van dijk was back when we signed him will be going for 20+ million and way out of our reach. Even look at Gary hooper when we signed him. 21 year old English striker off the back of a 20 goal season in the championship. He’d be a 20-25 million pound player now, it’s harder than ever for us

It's getting more difficult, no doubt that's why we need to be more creative in our approach.

Very few players are ready for elite level football at the age of 19 or 20, so we're still in an important part of the process for these footballers that have aspirations to play at the highest level. We offer things that Elite club academies can't; regular first-year games, exposure to European football and the chance to win trophies.

Our over-reliance on the loan system hinders us commercially (as they're not our player to sell if they do develop) and the development of our own players eg. the likes of Johnston or Henderson being overlooked for Burke or Weah. We should only be doing loan deals if there's a realistic prospect of us making it permanent afterwards, as we did with Édouard.

Dembele we were able to sign because he chose his personal development over the immediate money. Whatever we gave him would have been less that what he could have got elsewhere so that's nothing to do with paying him high wages. Hooper was going in to the last year of his contract and yes a Championship striker in the Hooper mould going into his last year now would cost 7/8 million to buy but i don't remember us selling players for 15/20million back then either so its all relative. Van Dijk was a one in a million and that's down to good scouting and a whole lot of luck but although we will struggle to find a player of that calibre again there is still value to be had at the less fashionable clubs in the less fashionable leagues from which Van Dijk was one.

Dembele only didn’t go to Spurs first, because he failed a medical.

Until we lose the match ball in a hedge and our manager starts arguing with fans in a bush i think we're a good bit away from our own "banter" years.

I remember reading reports of that and conflicting ones stating Fulham refused the deal as they wouldn't loan him back

Did he definitely fail a medical? If so he's landed lucky since then.

    From The Scotsman

“It was initially reported that Spurs refused to allow the player to return on loan to Fulham, who were battling relegation from the Championship at the time.

It seemed a rather short-sighted move by the Premier League side, considering Dembele was 19 years old and would have been considered a player for the future in North London.

However, Get West London are now reporting that Spurs were happy to loan the striker back to Fulham, and that it was a failed medical which prevented the move from taking place.“

Aye that's the report I remember reading. Thought you were meaning there had been a quote from Dembele or a Spurs coach to confirm it.

I think we can safely say the appointment of nick Hammond “on loan” could also be another addition to the list of the banter years thread.

Willing too give this guy a chance, but a feel if he had any real credentials we would be giving him a serious contract instead of a probation period to rebuild our squad, on possible the most important summer he have had in a long time. Who is making these decisions??don’t need much guessing anyway...

Sorry but anyone who uses that term to refer to post-administration 'rangers' and the events since their demise should be kneecapped.

Remember seeing Charlie big hawns of Normandy giving an interview from his hospital bed not that long ago

And I will not forget that “same old Alloa always cheating” chant from the hun shouting from the rooftops

I seen a pic of those hun players dressed in a 90s shell suit with arrows going up and down the sleeves today lol

C’mon too * if this is the Celtic banter years long may it continue

tbf we are closer to that than making another european final. Have family members living overseas and they are saying they can't buy anything on the celtic store because it doesn't accept overseas numbers when signing up, you can't make it up. I gave them my number and they got their stuff ordered but what a * up.
