Total *. The wealth of the country is more concentrated into the hands of the few than ever. The steppe ladder to get out of poverty was and remains education in the vast majority of cases. Free education, university grants, health, non-slum housing etc was what gave poor people a chance to survive childhood, get educated and even go on to University. That was all established in the 30s and 40s by Labour and to a lesser degree the liberals. A huge amount of people rose out of poverty into education and professions in the 50s, 60s, 70s and even 80s with no worries about massive debts etc. The tories just made a lot of hot air about getting on bikes etc, all spin and no substance. IMO the ONLY government who really revolutionised peoples lives for the better was the immediate post-WWII Labour government. Its simply incredibly what they did for the working classes. The Tories of the 1950s didnt touch any of the stuff this Labour government has set up and it remained intact until Thatchers. That said Blair was a true son of Thatcher and actually took her ideas further than she ever did. He is also one of the great * of our history

Wealth is more condensed but then that is true in almost every nation since the 1970s. It is a global trend and not specific to Thatcher.

The welfare state creation of the 1940s was largely drawn up by the Beveridge Report which was a cross parliament project and commissioned by a Tory PM. I think Attlee was a great PM but in typical labour fashion they over spent. In 1951 just before they were kicked out for generation labour passed as austerity bill which split the party.

Britain in the 1970s was nearly busto. Think not far off Greece today. We didn't even have enough power to fuel a full working week! We were the sick man of Europe and Callaghan had to be persuaded not to declare a state of emergency.

By the time Thatcher left power more working class people were in education, more were home owners and share owners, more had greater disposable income, and there was a far more accessible route into traditionally middle class occupations. I think she also made a lot of mistake along the way but she took a broken and near bankrupt nation and left the nation in a better way than she found it.

Wealth equality was never the plan. Allowing people to work their way out of the traditional confinement of class was the plan. That would inevitably lead to a wealth gap as people were left behind but it also provided a massive step ladder to millions of people

I was just thinking about this earlier when I was watching the Frankie Boyle interview on the Keiser Report from a few months back and they were talking about Thatcher's funeral.
