    Don't worry about strumming patterns.
Up down up up down down up down down..... bollocks.
    Play how you feel.
Most important part is learning the chord shapes and transitioning.
I learnt on an old guitar with a Beatles chord songbook.
That was it. Only thing I had to ask was how you made a barre chord which I learnt from a a guy in a pub.
Once your fingers get past a certain pain threshold they go hard at the tips and sort of go numb as well.
Can play all day after that.
Like someone else just said don't worry too much about the theory just get your chords right.

I'm not so much tearing it up at the moment, it's folding. I'm folding it up.

    Edit.

    Cheeky *.

I've heard people put their fingers in whiskey or use turps as the alcohol/ethanol is supposed to harden the skin quicker. Never tried it.
Also heard of people putting that PVA glue or nail varnish on their tips to offer some protection.
    Never tried that either.
I just played until my fingers bled.

    Like Bryan Adams. :yeah:

Found guitar incredibly frustrating to learn as I have fat, cumbersome fingers.

Piano was easier and more fun for me.

After a while it becomes muscle memory and you won't even have to think about where to put your fingers.

You'll build up a callous in a few weeks. It is painful to begin with though. Even if you've not picked it up in a few months.

I'm almost entirely self taught, my mate helped me a bit and pointed me in the right direction for content online.

Georgia Rose 16 is also an awesome teacher on YouTube for oasis in particular.
Justin is great as others have said.

You must play what you like, otherwise you'll lose interest.
Playing some riffs will enthuse you immensely, like the beatles or Bob Martley etc.

+1 for JustinGuitar (https://www.justinguitar.com) and Rocksmith, you can get it on PC and both consoles, way better selection on PC though as you can download free customs people have created from tabs.

    Anyone play left handed?

In the same boat as Sean just started trying to teach myself, playing it right handed at the minute but I'm left handed usually, does it make much difference or is it just whatever way you learn?
