Week 4 of the film club is going to be an easy watch, one I am sure all of us have seen before, Rain Man

Selfish yuppie Charlie Babbitt's father left a fortune to his savant brother Raymond and a pittance to Charlie; they travel cross-country.

One of my favourite films of all time and I present it to you in the knowledge that next week I am going to give us something harder to watch. So enjoy it while it lasts guys.

Usual 3 questions, First Response - how does the film make you feel? What did you think overall of the themes and ideas of the film.
Structure - does the film follow a linear form? What form does the film take on mostly for you? Road trip? Family love?
Characters - what roles do all the characters play, and more importantly (and one to highlight on for this film) what role do all the main characters take in the film? Charlie, Raymond and Susanna all play the 3 main characters, could the film have been different or the same if they were any different? What specific role does Susanna play to bother Charlie and Raymond?
What changes do all 3 characters take throughout the film, particularly the two brothers and their relationship changes.

A top film and also broke down a lot of barriers for autistic people. Dustin Hoffman gives a 10/10 performance and Tom Cruise is also brilliant. Overall 9/10.

Actually been years since I last watched it. Really looking forward to seeing it again now. May pop it on tonight. If not it will be a Monday night viewing I think.

Ohh, good movie. Have missed the last couple of these, definitely up for a sit through of this again.

IIRC, Hoffman won an Oscar for this and deservedly so.

    Just finished it.

Overall, a really good film. I thought about halfway through that it was starting to drag a bit and could have been shorter but the final act was fantastic.

Dustin Hoffman is incredible in it and I'm assuming he won the Academy Award that year? He certainly deserves it anyway. Having had experience working with kids with autism (mind you, not quite as full on as Raymond's) it's great to see an actor portray a character like that and, in my opinion, not overdoing it.

I thought Tom Cruise was also excellent. I can usually take or leave him as an actor, but this must be one of his career highlights. He had a very believable transformation from a selfish, rude * to an understanding and decent guy. His girlfriend I felt could just have been removed from the film. Didn't think she added anything of note. I sort of expected the kiss to lead to some conflict or an argument or something, but nope.

In terms of the structure, it's fairly simple. Like I said, I thought halfway through that they were stretching the film out a bit and it could have been shorter but the final act flew in.

    8/10.

I wonder how many folk (after watching this movie) took their autistic brother to a casino in the hopes of them cashing in, only to have came out with no money and a box of crayons?
