R.I.P. Stevie. My YOUNGER brother was born in 1969, and my mum wanted to call him Andrew. My dad got *, went up to see my mum and new born baby with a photo of Stevie Chalmers, and told everyone,"his name isn't Andrew, It's STEVIE. He's been known to brag about it when he has a drink in him.

Please, no more. Not so soon. I don't think my heart could take another hit like this past week has been. :54:

Devastating news. Once again, thoughts are with the Chalmers' family and to the remaining Lions, who have lost another of their own.

Thank you, Stevie! You'll Never Walk Alone.

    RIP. :shamrock:

Nice to see Inter. acknowledging another sad death of a Celtic great from that time.

I was reading into the background of their team after the 50th anniversary.

Sadly there’s only 6 of the Inter team left now. Their captain Armando Picchi died only 4 years later in 1971 (cancer) at the age of 36.

He already had two European Cup winners medals and was (like Billy) their captain during their finest period when they were known as ‘La Grande Inter’.

A great period for both teams before the (in my opinion) soulless present days Champions League of obscene money, player egos and tv driven agendas.

CELTIC manager Neil Lennon has paid tribute to Stevie Chalmers as the Celtic Family mourn the loss of the man who scored the most important goal in the club’s history.

Neil Lennon said: “This is desperately sad news and the thoughts and prayers of everyone at the club are with Stevie’s wife, Sadie, and their family at this extremely difficult time for them.

“In Celtic’s long and illustrious history, we have scored over 12,000 competitive goals since 1888. It is an impressive total, with some memorable goals scored by great players down through the years.

“Yet, it’s easy to pick the best and most important goal out of all of them. It came on May 25, 1967, in Lisbon’s Estadio Nacional and was scored by Stevie Chalmers.

“It was the winning goal and ensured Celtic became the first British team to win the European Cup. It created the legend of the Lisbon Lions and ensured the legendary status of all of those players.

“However, all of them remained humble and modest about their incredible achievements, and Stevie Chalmers epitomised the humility of Jock Stein’s great team.

“Stevie was a brilliant goalscorer for Celtic, with 231 goals to his name, but he was always a quiet and unassuming man whenever I met him, and happiest spending time with his fellow Lions.

“Like the rest of the Lions, Stevie was a Celtic supporter first and foremost, and, as supporters, we are all grateful for everything he did for this wonderful football club we all love.

“We are already a club in mourning, with Billy McNeill’s passing last week, and now we mourn the loss of another Lisbon Lion in Stevie Chalmers, Billy’s friend and former team-mate.

“We keep Stevie’s family in our thoughts, and also his fellow Lions who will also be devastated at this terrible news.”

Occasionally used to see him coming out the Jock Stein back when I had a ST.

Seemed like a humble and unassuming guy and if anything looked embarrased if anyone pointed him out or made a fuss!!

So sad that another of the legendary Lions has passed away.

I wish I had some smart words, phrases and the intelligence to do justice to the memory of this great Celt.

    * bless you Stevie, you will never be forgotten.
