Would it not be fairer to use some sort of clocking out/in device for smokers ?

People who then spend a lot of time on * breaks would then be paid less if they smoke more (if outwith normal break entitlements).

Fair enough. Staff at my work * off for * breaks all the time. Im left working away like a *. Easily adds up over a week. Even let me leave 30 mins before the smokers and id be happy. They easily work less than that through out the day with all those breaks.

Another plus side, bring this here. 6 days extra holiday, everyone would quit :56:

Would have thought the first attempt would be to get them to clock in and out of their * breaks.

Though may depend on the laws over there and if they would count that as discrimination for smoking/illness/something stupid.

Wouldn't expect many companies to actually reward the non smoker though.

    Good on the non smokers.

Work in a place where one guy gets special treatment for his * breaks, an extra 15 minutes allocated just to him (supposedly gets it docked, but no one believes that), plus all the sly "I'm away to check the stock room" comes back 20minutes later smelling of smoke.
Not to say he doesn't do the stock room, but clearly used the time to his advantage. Easily could say it is 2-3hours a week in * breaks.
Over 47weeks that's over 100hours. Actually more like 2weeks extra holiday I would be asking for.

Quite simply the employer should enforce smokers only smoking on their allocated breaks. I don't smoke now but I did for 10 years and never felt the need to take an extra break.

ffs, smokers targeted again. where do we stop? how about we target woman who take longer in the bog than guys, what about the muslims who pray through the day do we deduct that time? or how about we target people who take up more time standing about * about how often smokers go for a break. dry your eyes and get back to work.

Not sure Pal, can see it from both sides, was hoping the thoughts of the TC members would help me form an opinion, might even depend if you are a smoker or not.

Why not just ban smoking at work altogether.
As LV426 said what about muslims praying throughout the day.
Dock them wages if they dont do it in their break time.

Not docking them pay for not doing work in their working hours is discrimination against non smokers who dont get the extra break and discrimination against workers who don't skive off to pray during working non break hours.

I'm a smoker and Iwould agree that smokers get a lot more breaks than non smokers. If it was quiet in my work we could always nip away for a smoke and you could be gone 5/7 minutes sometimes. Say you go out 3 times, that could be 20 minutes. 5 times a week would work out about an hour and a half.

That works out to about 80 hours a year. Wow!

I'm in upper Management at my firm so dont really get a "break" all the employees can only have a * at their recognised break times. I smoke an ecig so can nip oot for a quick puff when I can in between meetings.

As an on and off smoker I can see it both ways. Im all for schemes like this. If you add up the amount of time you spend away for a smoke over a long period of time it is quite unfair on the people that dont.

One advantage is it would encourage people to quit.

One disadvantage is that it doesnt seem to take into account how much someone smokes. Equally penalizing someone who smokes one at work and someone who smokes 10 doesnt seem fair.

They say it takes ye on average about 8 minutes to smoke a normal cigarette.

So add in how long it takes you to walk to yer smoking place, how long they stand about talking to folk etc - could easily say 15mins for a *.

If they only smoke one that would easily be done during a lunch break though.
