Can anyone tell me how many goals we have scored and conceded from set pieces this year (the whole of 2018 so far)?

There was an emphasis at the World Cup over 40% of goals came from those situations this year in Russia, but historically this number has been pretty significant at previous World Cups also.

My point is, I would be stunned if Celtic's goal production at set pieces was anywhere near on par with this, and even if it is even half that number, don't think it is an entirely unrealistic target that 1 goal in every 5 produced could come from a set piece situation.

Set pieces are pretty easy to practice, and they can be difficult to defend against. We lost one just crucially in the last minute at the weekend game with Killie, so while things are not clicking in other parts of the pitch, is this something that the team management should be identifying as a way to get us moving in the right direction. We seem to have no problems when it comes to winning corner kicks etc, not just this season but since the start of the year, but can remember precious few goals actually coming from these.

Although we don't have that many that are particularly good in this area, surely this would be an obvious source of goal threat, for nights such as this, when we endeed up getting 12 or 13 corner kicks, but only managed to make a couple of them need to make the keeper work, and made zero of which actually count. And there are so many games like this, where we rack up the numbers of corners and free kicks, but make precious few actually meaningfully count.

I actually thought griff corners were quite good, why the fk noone stands out wide or even just outside edge of 6 yard box I'll never know, * knows how many times it went through there.

Griff's deliveries are generally decent, so when he is in the team, that's not so much the issue, compared to getting on the end of them, I suppose. But here also lies the issue, that a CF, and probably our best and most natural goal scorer, especially at the moment, is the one that is being relied upon to provide the delivery rather than the finish.

We are an utter disgrace at corner kicks, especially in an attacking situation. Every delivery from Griffiths tonight was spot on with the exception of 1 maybe, and not one player has the desire or fight to get on the end of it. Everyone waiting on a second ball we never win anyway. We'd genuinely be as well punting it back to the keeper from corners at this rate.

    Year 2018

    68 goals
12 from set pieces (including pens) 18%
    5 (excluding pens)(3 corners, 2 free kicks) 7%

We’ve scored from three corners in 40 games. One of which was head tennis to get it in.

    Thanks @Marty McFly

Pretty much backs up my point though. Even including spot kicks, that really is not many at all, but really underlines a real deficiancy in this area that is not really being utilized all that well.

Especially if we took the total number of freekicks in attacking areas and corners into account. Tonight there were 12 or 13 corner kicks. Pretty sure it was close to double figures at the weekend also.

It's all well and good to be playing beautiful flowing attacking football, but at times like we have been just recently, as a team psoing more of a threat at set pieces seems something that we are missing a trick at here.

Especially when it comes to Europe, where defences may be a little bit harder to break down at times, making the most set play opportunitires could give us more to work with.

    Indeed.

Let’s say on average we have four corners per game, that about fair?

    That’s a 1.9 % conversion rate.

I've never seen us be this bad at set pieces.

Griffiths is the only one capable of shooting and scoring with free kicks and Boyata is the only oen who can score from a corner or free kick into the box. its ridiculous how bad the team is at set pieces.

    Corner Kicks this Month:

    13 v St J tonight
    9 v Killie
    8 v Rosnburg
    5 v St Mirren
    14 v Sevco

    Goals scored: 0

49 corner kicks this month alone. That is an average of almost 10 per game.

In that case we’ve roughly scored from 0.75% of our corners in the year 2018.

With those odds what’s even the point in swinging it in? :giggle1:

I knew it was bad but those stats are pathetic . Can't believe Griff is the only one that can actually deliver a ball out of our squad

I tend to hate short corners but it is baffling that we haven't tried an alternative when the situation is so bad at the moment

Griffiths is the only one in the squad that can deliver a ball but boyata is the only one that can header it, for the size of ajer lustig hendry they’re not dominating any defenders in the air at corners the way balde mjallby and Varga did

We don’t convert anything like the amount of corners we have into goals as we should be.

We get shitloads and they are a complete waste. There was a period against the manks a few weeks ago they conceded corner after corner without fear of conceding, when in reality we should have been capitalising on them.

Not good enough, wanting to play lovely flowing football shouldn’t instantly mean you can’t work at deadball situations and if we are working on them, whoever is leading those training sessions should be taken off them and someone else brought in.

Unless it a Griffiths free kick within range, we never look like scoring them. Funny, because it also our biggest weakness defensively.

That's something we never hear anymore with our team. "That's one straight off the training ground"

I remember hearing that loads with Lennons team. Never this team though.
