It's weird because when you have as large an income as these cartels do you are the economy in many ways. I remember reading about the Cali cartel and El Dorado cartel in Colombia filling entire warehouses with paper money, and getting it so quickly that they couldn't do anything with it and ended up just burying it in the ground. Last time the US feds done a major raid on a series of banks involved in money laundering it was estimated at around $300 billion dollars in the cartels possession.

And these groups don't work in the way of the 'traditional' drug groups. There Paramilitary groups akin to Arkan's Tigers. Los Zetas are group of corrupt special forces guys (trained by the US) that the Gulf Cartel got in as added muscle then formed their own cartel.

It's a horrible mess and kind of puts into perspective what these two women fell into. If Mr Drugs Lord says smuggle this * you don't really have the "no" option.

What's the ballpark figure for drug smugglers in Peru? Is it 15 years, or is it usually less?

6-15 years, however they are usually sentenced to 6-8 years.

More often than not, the foreign nationals are sent home to serve their sentence, due to the fact Peru cannot handle the sheer volume of prisoners - especially foreign nationals.

Aye, was reading an article about it on CNN. Peru has something like 1000 foreign prisoners out 48,000 prisoners and they cannot/don't want to accommodate them. They signed a bill in 1998 (or round about), that would allow prisoners to be sent home to serve their sentence.

That is unless the Peruvian government want to send out a message, therefore these 2 may be unlucky.

As harsh as the sentence sounds it was the minimum they could have got so they're lucky in that sense. If anything it should serve as a deterrent to anyone else stupid enough to try it, but that's most likely wishful thinking.

Yeah man, I don't think deterrence really works. It will make the next lot more careful, that's all.

That these girls behaved very stupidly is not in question, but I feel sorry for them, and especially their families. I hope they get out early as the idea that they are a danger to anyone is pretty laughable.

They got lucky, if they weren't young and Scottish the authorities would've thrown the book at them.
