Literally the first headline on Google...

‘Wales given big fright by Italy before gaining 11th straight win’

You do realise that Google uses cookies, so what will be first for you will not be first for me. The headlines I came across were far more matter of fact, the word 'cruise' was used in one. That aside, I wouldn't consider a 'big fright' to be "staring defeat in the face". I think the reality is that Wales won a lot less comfortably than most predicted, they were always going to win.
That certainly seems to be the impression the BBC and The Guardian gave me. Wales Online are, rightly, a lillte more concerned by performances.

The Guardian - ‘a real scare’.

    Regardless, you were wrong.

A 'real scare' is a long way from staring defeat in the face.
We had established that a while back, if you were trying to prove that you were arguing with yourself, something tells me that you have done that before.

It’s really not. In fact in sports journalism parlance it’s almost literally the same thing.

Even in the tabloids, it isn't. Saying it doesn't make it so.

Mate, it isn’t. Italy were never ahead in the match. Wales were given a scare, but were never in any real danger of losing the game.

And just to be petty, because it is a bugbear of mine, something is either literal or it isn’t. Something can’t be almost literal, even when the word is being used for emphasis rather than, well, literally.

Auckland looking almost competent this year, big job for McDonald but they gave the Crusaders a good game and very nearly won.

They should’ve won, imo. Or at least got the draw!

Yep. From memory a Crusaders player was pretty lucky to avoid a yellow for a deliberate knock on in the closing stages.
