It's got faster and the players are fitter but at the cost of skill. Imagine someone like Stan Bowles, for example, fitter and playing in the modern era... He'd be regarded as good as Messi in my opinion and if not definitely amongst the best players in the World.

Oh yes, Stan Bowles. The man who's extensive honours list begins and concludes with "Brentford Supporters' Player of the Year, 1981-82". Yes, he would definitely be regarded as highly as Messi. :giggle1:

I'd do some research on Stan Bowles before you make statements like that...

He was considered by Johnan Cruyff to be a great player and that QPR side was considered the closest any English side got to emulating the Dutch philosophy of Total football...

Wikipedia only tells a fraction of the story.

I'm not claiming he was a bad player, but to mention him in the same sentence as the greatest player of all time is utterly ludicrous, in my humble opinion.

I have suspicions that what you have learnt about him is a recent discovery and straight from Wikipedia to be honest.

I also said that if he was fitter and playing in the modern era he'd be comparable to Messi.

If he had anywhere near the ability of Messi, I wouldn't have needed to have searched for him.

You could have loads of pro's and cons about each era. Maradona for example would've played against some of the toughest defences in footballing history during his prime and on dreadful pitches..

Could go on about loads but it still doesn't matter in my opinion. We're living through an era watching the best footballer that's ever lived..

    That is still my favourite.

Don't get adverts like that now...better days and it was only just over 13 or 14 year ago. :56:

    Denilson was some player too.

Appears in both of those, although was on the way down around the one I posted.

Its all to do with what team is playing around you. Messi and Ronaldo are both immense but they are playing for Barcelona and Real Madrid. If they were playing with say.....Real Bettis or Villareal they would still be great players but no one would be saying they were the best they have ever seen. If you put Paulo Di Canio, Lubo Moravcik or Ginfranco Zola in today's Real Madrid or Barcelona teams then Im pretty sure people would be considering them amongst the best they have ever seen.

Players will never get the same credit playing for smaller, less successful clubs.

Its no coincidence that Messi has played with Barcelona his whole career and Ronaldo has played with Manchester Utd and Real Madrid. If they hadnt been at clubs of that size they would simply not be considered as among the greatest players ever

It's close between them, but I'm sure Guardiola and even Xavi himself said that Iniesta would surpass them.

Not a verbatim quote but apparently Guardiola once said to Xavi, "You will retire me, but he (Iniesta) will retire everyone."

Footballers were much cooler back then man. I mean you still had the top talent earning mega bucks but at least you didn't have Blandy McBland playing upfront for Stoke averaging 6 goals a season and taking home £100k per week. There was more personality in them I feel and weirdly in the age of
pretty much instant access to modern footballer via social media, the fans seemed much closer to them.
