I don't understand the contempt for Robbie Keane from some people on here. Without his goals there is a chance we could have finished 3rd in the league in 2010.

:56: Show me one piece of evidence that we made an offer to buy Keane.

It was our worst season in living memory and yet we only finished 6 points behind the Huns.

And to think we were cheated out of two derby games...

Robbie Keane is a mercenary same as 95% of players now, he has checked us off his checklist now so he can do as he pleases. I would rather a young hungry upstart with potential and sell-on value.

People talk about how much he moved he stayed at Spurs for 6/7 years in total.

And he only had loan spells at Celtic and West Ham as he wasn't getting first team football. The move for Liverpool was never won he could have turned down at the time as they were in a much much better position than Spurs and also Spurs knew that getting £20 million for him was excellent business.

He moved to La Galaxy as he knew he was finished in the EPL and wanted to try something.

I bet ideally for him he probably wished he made much more of an impact at Liverpool at stayed there for 3 or 4 seasons.

Did we really ever make a serious attempt to sign him from Spurs after his loan finished?

I love Robbie, and thoroughly enjoyed his time here in the Hoops. We were never in a position to sign him on a permanent basis.

Isnt every player a mercenary? Isnt every worker a mercenary? I am so I done really understand why people use the term as an insult when it comes to employment.

Not necessarily. You can be a loyal worker.

Robbie Keane was superb for Celtic during his loan spell in what was a difficult time for us. I'd have loved him to stay but hey ho.

Celtic fan or not, very few players would take a massive wage cut to come up here and play permanently so I don't blame him for it plus to my knowledge we didn't even put put in a transfer bid for him.

Because he's played for about 30 teams. No loyalty at all.

...and sell shirts (which there's nothing wrong with, if the money's going the right way).

Why should a footballer be loyal? Football clubs aren't exactly loyal to footballers, works both ways.

I don't have a problem with players not being loyal. I was pointing why he might be called a mercenary.

Mercenary or not, I think he genuinely loves Celtic. 'Why didn't he force a move here?'; 'Did we even bid for him?' - these questions are, to a degree, irrelevant now.

What I'd like to know is, if he wanted to take a wage cut and end his career here, would you say no? I, for one, definitely wouldn't. I don't know if he still has the pace, but his experience alone would be worth it if we could get him on a reasonable wage.

Fair enough. People seem to be bitter at the fact he didn't stay permanently but as plenty have already said, there's no evidence to suggest we even bid to take him here.

He came here on loan and scored a shitload of goals at a time when we were at our lowest ebb since the 90s.

He brought a tiny bit of relief to an otherwise * season.

We then never made any (public) move for him after his loan period.

I fail to see what he did wrong?

He came here as a player way too good for the league and so therefore scored a fair number of goals, then his loan spell ended. I don't have contempt for him, my opinion of him is exactly the same as it was before he ever played for us. I don't hold any more fond memories of him than I do for say Zurawski. In fact that's a lie, I have more fond memories of Zurawski. That penalty against Spartak and the 4 goals against Dunfermline.
