    Maradona for me.

You have to think of football as a game that has evolved, and he was the Isaac Newton of football. He invented so many tricks and flicks, the 'Zidane' turn, the 'Ronaldinho' flick, the Brazilian 'Ronaldo' stepover. The main man Maradona did all of this way back in the late 70s and throughout the 80s.

Maradona played in an era where he wasn't as protected by referees, he got kicked * out of on tottie pitches, wearing * football boots and kicking much heavier * footballs. I think all of these factors have to come into play when thinking about it.

That's why for me it's always a respect thing, you just have to respect the era they played in the fitness, the science at the time and look at now where resources are much easier to acquire and access.

Anyway, they are all * geniuses. I enjoy watching every talented player. Ronaldo and Messi are the bollocks as well.

    Correct.

Messi is miles ahead of anyone to have ever played the game and it’s definitely not a generational thing.

Cruyff at number 5 for me.

Messi played at a higher level, for longer, reached a higher peak and stayed there for longer, in an era where football is of a higher standard and he’s playing against higher quality sides than Maradona ever did. Messi is one of the most fouled players on the planet and he gets plenty of rough treatment.

Even disregarding all that, Messi’s record breaking habits are second to none (in the literal sense of that phrase).

I didn't say I disagreed with you mate.

Plus I'm not wrong as it's an opinion. So no need to explain big fella.

    Potentially.

But talking about Ronaldo vs Messi etc naw I don't think anybody is wrong about that, as decent arguments could be stated either way.

Messi vs Kirk Broadfoot, aye obviously.

Aye the camera panned in on him at one point and you could just see it in his face. "For * sake, do I have to get the boots back on!?".

Well, clearly people are. One is objectively better than the other, regardless of our subjectivity.

Why contribute to a debate when you don’t want to continue the conversation when challenged?

Because I don't like guys who act like wanks and get on their high horse about opinions.

I always respect people's opinions on here, some of them are * mental but that's fine. But talking about favourite all time players and best players of all time in different eras shouldn't constitute a right and wrong answer, and folk being outright 'wrong'.

That's bollocks. My original post if you read it didn't necessarily say I thought Maradona was pound for pound the best footballer of all time. I just think he contributed most to football, more than any other player. He was so entertaining, he invented all of the famous tricks that other players get the credit for. He inspired guys like Messi, without Maradona a lot of players may have turned out differently or not even followed football as passionately. He also played in an entirely different era so it's that old debate.

The Lisbon Lions vs today's team etc etc. Brendan Rodgers team may pump them aye because they are much fitter and faster and don't smoke and now more about football and science etc. But you have to give credit for that time. That's all I'm saying mate.

I think avoiding comparing players from different eras is a complete cop out. Messi will have undoubtedly been inspired by Maradona but Messi has done things in the game that Maradona (or anyone else) could never do.

Personally I think the Lions would beat Rodgers’ team.

I would hope the Lions would. But I've heard many mention the fitness and the science of today etc. We will never know, that's the beauty of comparing the greats. Fundamentally I think football has evolved so much and we're now at a point where you must be a really good athlete to survive in the game at the highest level. Downright talent and skill will only get you so far. You also see guys who aren't necessarily the best most talented players, but they are * athletic machines. It's interesting though, like I said as long as we're being entertained.
