Just picked up on a bit of needle in the International football thread regarding the Irishness of Irish people from Northern Ireland and how people from the Republic view them, as not been as Irish as they are
Obviously all people who are born in Ireland are Irish, if anything, I think people born in the North have to prove their Irishness more than people from the south. It disappoints me to think that people from the south view people from the north as less Irish

Or is it like England, were Northerners hate Southerners

Views please or is this bollocks

There would be quite alot of "Freestaters" in the 26 Counties who would hold the opinion that the Nordies belong to the U.K.

*,and anyone who says they are more Irish than another is also a *.

Coming from the "North" it sickens me to hear someone say i have to prove myself to be Irish.

If someone said that to my face it would not even get a worded answer.

Worked in Dublin for a while and used to live in Donegal and never experienced it myself but I don't doubt there are plenty of those partionist types out there, but I wouldn't say anywhere near the majority of people in the south are like that. They seem to love McClean when he is playing for Ireland so it wouldn't seem that big of an issue.

I was unfortunate enough to be at the GAA annual congress at the weekend, they were voting on new rules on conduct. One of the attendees spoke up saying "It shouldn't matter if shouldn't matter if a player is black, gay or from the north of Ireland there is no room in our games for discrimination"
So the GAA clearly think its an issue.

Coming from lisburn I sometimes feel less Irish than others. Going to a Protestant secondary school probably didn't help. At the end of the day though, the fact is I'm Irish. What is it that even makes someone more Irish? There's no official definition

There's probably some logic to it. A lot of people, who call themselves Irish and would like to see an united Ireland, still pay taxes to Britain...perhaps people in the Republic see that as a contradiction and a betrayal.

Have worked on building sites with loads of lads from the 6 counties on Donegal , Boston and Dublin and never really had any issue regarding irishness with any of them. Their was loads of slagging going on about

Was asked one time in Dublin do you need a passport to get across the border in that * new posh Dublin accent
Also I notice a lot of people in the south don't give a * about the "north" and have very little knowledge of Irish history

Hardly their fault! After all it was the southern government who abandoned the Irish of the north and even arrested and killed Irishmen who wanted to continue to unite the whole of Ireland.

And besides..... More south Irish leave their shores to work in Britain than anywhere else. How does that figure?

I'm not sure if it is a case of some Southern Irish people necessarily seeing people from the North as less Irish. It's more that a small minority of Southern Irish people are scared of people from the North because they remind them of the conflict in the North and they would have rather just put their fingers in their ears and have ignored the conflict of the last 40 years.

:smiley-laughing002: I know the video you are on about.
But these days alot of people in the North could say the same about Adams... :50:
