Obese workers should be allowed to start work late to avoid the rush-hour crush, a British government adviser has said, and they should have the right to sue employers if they are not offered jobs or promotion because of their weight.

Professor Stephan Bevan, of the Institute for Employment Studies, said businesses should make more "accommodations" for workers carrying excess weight, adding it was time those suffering "functional impairment" were supported at work in the same way as those with other health conditions.

Critics called the idea "ridiculous", with concessions for the obese likely to fuel resentment among fellow workers.

But speaking at the European Congress on Obesity, in Vienna, Prof Bevan said the condition should be made a "protected characteristic" under the Equality Act.

"It's the same as if you went for a job and didn't get it because you were a woman," he said.

Prof Christopher Snowdon, a lifestyle expert, said: "Being fat is not a disability. If obese people are to be given special privileges, why not smokers, alcoholics and compulsive gamblers?"

It comes as projections to be presented at the congress by the UK Heart Forum and Institute of Technology in Ireland show that five million Britons will be morbidly obese by 2035, the Body Mass Index of those aged over 40 doubling within 20 years.

The body mass index is such primitive inaccurate way of measuring if someone is obese or not.

It doesn’t take into consideration how much muscle someone has, There’s plenty of guys who can be under 15% body fat and can have visible abs but yet according to BMI are “obese”

Sounds like a parody from the daily mash! I sense someone is looking for attention (or a lie in!)

This should offset the price increase in clothing.

Almost worth putting on some weight. :56:

Can we have a serious thread discussing this 'illness' or whatever you want to call it? I can't wrap my head around so many people are so obese.

Mainly because cheap food is full of sugar.
Mainly because drinks companies and food companies paid scientists to tell everyone that fat was bad for you not sugar.
Mainly because people are so stressed, tired and overworked that comfort eating is seen as the norm.
Bad food, even worse options and bad choices are only the start.
We are literally all being turned into sugar junkies and poisoned by food manufacturers with our own consent and governments who have their fingers in the pie are doing nothing.

But they don’t have to eat that * - no they don’t.
But you try working your * off for 10 or 12 hours a day to be able to afford to just pay rent and then heat the place.
Then the choices for cheap food are usually pretty bad.
Plus it’s easy to comfort eat because you are tired or stressed.
50 years ago we didn’t have the option of fast, mass produced food - we had it straight off the farms almost.
Now we shop in supermarkets, fast food joints and pub restaurants. All selling high calorie sugary * on the whole.

For what it's worth, I work 12 hour shifts and I am not overweight. I live pay cheque to pay cheque, as well. I was waiting for someone to chuck in the word 'genetics'...that is only thing I can really agree with when people really do try to lose weight and maintain a happy figure, but still find themselves short. Perhaps it's the way I was raised...being Irish, our diet largely subsists of spuds and we've still a strong farm background so the meat isn't as tainted as what you'd probably find in McDonalds.

I think i probably only need an extra stone of weight before i am obese as measured by BMI. Might give me something to aim for if it cuts my working week!
