It really is amazing just how bad they are right now. Everything you say above is accurate right now with them. Shameful performance this weekend.

Still not sure how they're doing it as the players they have available are absolutely gash. All credit to O'Neill, heroic stuff.

Aye, it is pretty staggering tbh.

Makes Scotland's situation look even more dire. When you compare our squad with theirs we really should be doing so much better.

They have guaranteed second place in the group, however that does not guarantee a playoff place.

For years players who want to play for them have made themselves available every time. Guys like Brunt, Evans and Davis have always answered call ups from youth team level right through and I suppose that instills a real sense of pride we maybe lack in the Scottish side and something you can definitely see lacks in the England team.

On a slightly related note, something I also think they have developed over the last 15-20 years is a real "chip on the shoulder" mentality almost. They see bus fulls of players who automatically qualify for the Republic opt for the ROI side despite playing youth games for the North. I remember reading Gerry Armstrong in particular was up in arms about the Republic "stealing away" all the talented players in the North. Obviously religion and nationalist/loyalist leanings are the biggest factor in these decisions but I think you'll have had a lot of the Northern players looking on particularly when the ROI were qualifying for the WC etc. and wanting a piece of it and being aggrieved that all the success was arguably built on "their" players essentially.

Michael O'Neill has done an unbelievable job. Would like to see him being considered an option of Martin was to step down should we fail to qualify. Not sure how realistic though.

Course it does, they have the best defensive record in qualifying.

    Bollocks :giggle1:

It's been pretty common knowledge and practice for some time now actually.

Marc Wilson, Shane Duffy, Euan O'kane, Darron Gibson, James McLean some names of current and recent ROI players who played for the North at youth level and opted to play for the Republic at senior. It happened long before as well with many other players and will continue to happen in future.

It's also much more common at youth team levels in terms of switching from an early age.

    So aye. Bollocks.

Think I'm correct in saying our beloved Brendan wore both shades of green growing up?
